Background to developments • March 2007 – publication of The Adult ESOL Strategy for Scotland • Summer 2007 – start of qualification development process • Funding for developments provided by Scottish Government, ESF and SQA • Results of work led to the development of three national qualifications for TESOL practitioners

G91E 46 PDA Introduction to Tutoring ESOL, SCQF 6 • Two mandatory Units: • F43X 33 Language and Learning in ESOL, SCQF 6, 1 credit • F43W 33 Developing ESOL Tutoring Skills, SCQF 6, 1 credit • A first stage qualification aimed at current or future volunteers and tutor assistants • Appropriate for Voluntary sector, Community Learning and Development and others working with ESOL learners • Develops core subject knowledge and skills • Develops practical tutoring skills

GA53 49 PDA in TESOL, SCQF level 9 • Four mandatory Units: • FE71 36 ESOL and the Learners, SCQF 9, 1 credit • FE70 36 English Language Frameworks (TESOL), SCQF 9, 1 credit • FE6Y 36 Language Skills (TESOL), SCQF 9, 1 credit • FE72 36 ESOL Planning and Delivery, SCQF 9, 1 credit • An initial ESOL teaching qualification aimed at practitioners • Develops subject specialist knowledge and skills • Develops skills in planning, delivery and assessment • Encourages reflection on and evaluation of own practice

GC3D 50 PDA in Applied Practitioner Studies in TESOL, SCQF level 10 • Two mandatory Units: • 1.FK8X 37 English Language Analysis for TESOL, SCQF 10, 2 credits • FK8Y 36 ESOL Assessment and the Scottish Framework, SCQF 9, 1 credit • One optional Unit from: • FK8W 36 Teaching ESOL Literacies to Adults, SCQF 9, 1 credit • FM1G 36 ESOL Syllabus Design, SCQF 9, 1 credit • Builds on specialist knowledge and skills gained through initial TESOL qualifications • Develops specialist, in-depth knowledge and skills in practical areas to meet the demands and challenges of ESOL planning, delivery and assessment within the Scottish ESOL context
