Setting up your iPad • Need a computer with iTunes • Need an iTunes account • Very helpful to have credit or gift card to set up account • Takes from 5 to 15 minutes if there’s no complications
App Store • Need Apple ID and password • Many free educational apps • Most - you get what you pay for • Beware of in-app options • Part of iTunes Store
iTunes Store • iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Apps • Books • Podcasts • Movies, TV shows, etc. • Music • iTunes U

Four buttons • Home button - indented w/ white square • Sleep/wake button - top right • Volume control - up and down • Mute or lock display in horizontal or vertical position (set your preference in Settings)
Arranging Apps • Maximum of 6 in dock • Hold any app icon until all are shaking; Drag on page or to another page • Click on Home button to leave ‘earthquake’ mode • Delete app by holding down icon in ‘earthquake mode & clicking x
Moving & Deleting Apps • Hold to enter ‘Earthquake’ mode • Hold and drag to move app • To delete, press and hold, then tap the ‘x’ symbol that appears
Folderize apps or not??? • Maximum apps that will display: 11 pages x 20 + 6 on dock=226 • Even 16GB iPad can hold many more than 226; locate & open with Spotlight • Folders are only option to display them all!
Save time using Spotlight • Screen (page) to left of home page • Smart searching - usually only have to type in first few letters and suggested apps/contacts/song will be listed • Click on desired choice
Keep a cloth handy... • Or a SMART Cover • Microfiber • Do not spray directly on iPad • Screen protectors???
Password Protection • Four digits • Set restrictions • See all options in Settings
Best to charge overnight • 4-5 hrs. for full charge • Full charges lasts 8-9 hrs. • Use wall charger that comes with iPad • Charging with USB to computer takes longer • Rarely need to power off iPad; just put it to sleep
Soft Reset • Extreme cases when iPad freezes • Hold Sleep/Wake button and Home button for a few seconds; iPad will restart • Force quit an app, hold Sleep/Wake button until “Slide to Power Off” comes up; then hold Home button for about 5 seconds
Hard Reset • Notice strange behavior • Have 20%+ charge, in ‘Power On’ state, hold down Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at same time, ignore red slide ‘To power off, keep both buttons down until white Apple logo appears (could take a long time)
Set up email account • Highly recommended - Best way to get anything ‘out’ of the iPad • This is the address from which your photo, note, etc. will be sent • Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, RR, AOL - easiest; school email more complex to set up
Simply Notes! • Minimal editing • Cut, Copy, Paste • Options to send by email • Auto-save; first line if the file name
Make use of suggestions • This feature can be turned off in keyboard settings (Settings>General) • To choose the suggestion, simply stop typing and tap the space bar • Shake to undo/redo or use undo/redo keys
Triple-layer keyboard • Alphabet • Numbers & more • Symbols • Keyboard secrets: • Slide to cap • Cap lock • Shortcuts - apostrophe & quotes • Multi-function keys
Using the magnifying glass • Zone in to edit misspellings or omissions • Press finger and wait — it will appear • Release to cut, copy, and paste
Safari Tips • Add favorites to Home Screen • Use Booksmarks & Bookmark bar • Flip to up to 9 screens • Other options - Mail link, Add Bookmark, Print • To save or copy image - press & hold; saved image goes to Camera Roll in Photos
Print from iPad? • AirPrint - wireless printing • Select HP Models will print from iPad • See this site: http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html
Photos • Front and rear facing cameras • Video and still options • Taking a screenshot - together press Sleep/wake and Home buttons for a second • Options - email, print, slideshow
Videos • Flash format not supported • Get from iTunes, iTunes & • Video podcasts, TV shows, buy or rent movies in Tunes
FaceTime • Like Skype • Other user must have FaceTime, too • Wi-Fi required • Call to email address or phone number in contacts
iBooks • Holds ebooks and pdfs • Options to change font & size, view to vert. or horz., brightness • Double-click on word: copy, get dictionary def., highlight, add note, or search • Take advantage of free books and samples
A few more misc. secrets... • Two-finger scroll; there’s no scroll bar on iPads • In Safari, double-tap on a column, word or picture to fits width to screen • Double tap Home button to go to first screen • To get rid of blank pages & spaces - Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout • Quit apps, adjust brightness, & more - double tap Home button to see app drawer, tap & hold one of open apps until jiggling, tap on red circle to quit
