  2. American Revolution British Advantages American Disadvantages • Strongest navy in the world • Experienced military • Wealthy • Huge population British Disadvantages - many Br. Soldiers were “mercenaries” – fighting for money (Americans called them hessians) - Br traveled 3,000 miles over Atlantic to get men & supplies to U.S. • Few ships • Small population • Volunteer soldiers; sign up for only 1 year • Poor (new country) • Short on ammo & weapons • Not all colonists supported cause (loyalist) American Advantage • Fighting for FREEDOM • Fighting on own land (familiar with territory) • George Washington – leader of Continental Army

  3. Role of African Americans in American Revolution • Beginning of war – not allowed to fight for colonists • British – offered freedom in exchange for fighting • By 1778 – were allowed to fight for Americans

Role of Women in American Revolution • Most often women followed husbands to cook and clean • Deborah Sampson – disguised herself as a boy and fought in war • Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley (also called Molly Pitcher – for carrying pictures of water)– took her husband’s place after he died. • Margaret Corbin – also took her husband’s place, after he died.

Role of Native Americans in American Revolution • Native Americans sided with British in AR • If British win, they go home • If Patriots win…as they will, the Native Americans will have to continue dealing with the Americans. • Americans (Br colonists) have not been very good to Native Americans in the past.

The Crisis (or The American Crisis) • Pamphlet written in December 1776 • By Thomas Paine • George Washington read The Crisis to his men during the winter at Valley Forge and convinced his men not to give up. “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

  7. Common Sense • Famous pamphlet written by Thomas Paine right before war • Urged colonists that it only made common sense to break away from GB and form our own country

  8. “The shot heard around the world” • First battle of American Revolution – Battle of Lexington and Concord • Means – the whole world is watching to see who wins the American Revolution

E Pluribus Unum • Motto of great seal of U.S. • Comes from Latin poem • Means=“out of many (colonies), one (country)” • Appears on all US coins, as required by law Question: Which group started printing money? • Stamp Act Congress • Continental Congress • Second Continental Congress • Sons of Liberty
