  2. Running out of beaver • The amount of furs was shrinking • The two companies could no longer operate at full scale • Decided that merging was the only option • 1821 they joined

  3. New company? • While the two companies merged they maintained the HBC name • Continued to ship furs to Britain out of Hudson’s Bay • Hired many First Nations as guides and workers • Fired many of the Europeans

  4. New Leader • George Simpson became the boss of the HBC in 1821 • He was a “hands-on” boss, worked in the field • Was a harsh boss and would travel to all the trading posts without warning to inspect the operation

  5. Personal Life of Simpson • Married a Metis women while in Red River • Had several kids • In 1829 he returned to England to see family (did not bring his wife) • Returned in 1830 with a new 18 year old wife (he was 40) • His old Metis wife and kids were ordered to leave the colony

  6. Racism • Upon returning Simpson announced he would not talk to any of Metis heritage • Wanted his employees to do the same • Red River was a small community • He isolated himself as a result
