  1. What is Life Science? What is a scientist? What types of scientists are there? WHAT IS SCIENCE? 6th Grade Life Science, Canarelli MS, Yancey Rm. 623

  2. What is Science? • Science is everywhere around you all the time. Breathing= Science, Weather=Science, Animals=Science, Food=Science, Machines=Science, just to name a few things. PAIR SHARE other examples. • The Goal of Science is to investigate and understand the world around us in an organized way. • It is to: • Explain events/phenomena • Use explanations to make predictions • Make observations to create data/information • Record information/data • Make logical interpretations based on data • Communicate these findings • Life Science is the study of living organisms (things). • Bio (life) + -logy (study of) = biology (Greek roots)

  3. Life Science: study of living things

  4. Who/what is a scientist?Circle Map-defining in context Draw the circle map in your journal-topic in the center. Brainstorm at your table for a few minutes. Write at least 10 facts. Highlight your top 2 facts. scientist/s Does experiments archaeologist Studies a field of science

  5. What is a scientist? A scientist is a person who studies/practices in a specific field of science. Science (scientia-Latin) + -ist (-ista/-istes Latin/Greek) = scientist

  6. Biologist: scientist who studies living organisms (things) Clean-up Oil spill Covered in oil Multi-flow map: cause and effect

  7. Branches of Life Science/Careers • Anatomy- study of internal structure • Bacteriology- study of microscopic bacteria • Botany- study of plants • Cytology- study of structure and function of cells • Ecology- study of environmental issues • Embryology- study of early development of organisms • Entomology- study of insects • Eugenics- branch of genetics dealing with humans • Herpetology- study of reptiles • Histology- study of tissues • Ichthyology- study of fish

  8. More Branches of Life Science • Morphology- Study of total structure of organisms • Mycology- study of fungi • Ornithology- study of birds • Paleontology- study of past geological periods • Parasitology- study of parasites • Pathology- study of disease • Physiology- study of function of organisms • Protozoology- study of protozoan • Taxonomy- naming, grouping, and classifying organisms • Virology- study of viruses • Zoology- study of animals

  9. How scientists help our world? • Life Scientists help our world by: • Studying our planet and the universe around us • Working to preserve our resources and the environment • Working to keep species from being endangered/extinct • Studying the Human Genome (cells/DNA/heredity) • Studying diseases and treatments/cures • Trying to educate us about our bodies (make us healthier) • Creating new treatments, such as gene therapy • Studying the impacts of humans on the Earth

  10. How do scientists compare?Double Bubble Map-comparing and contrasting- difference Draw the map in your journal. 2. Decide on your 2 scientists to compare. difference similar difference difference Scientist Scientist Similar difference difference Similar 4. Use 2 colors to highlight-one for the biggest likeness and one for the biggest difference. difference 3. Fill in bubbles. You may have more bubbles. Discuss at your table, if needed. difference

  11. Example: Scientist Double Bubble Map

  12. Share your maps with a partner. If not finished, ask ?.
