  2. Focus Rule Words: 1) waxed (wax + ed) 2) shallower (shallow + er) 3) guffawed (guffaw + ed) (guffaw = explosive laughter) 4) throwing (throw + ing) 5) rawest (raw + est)

  3. Academic Verbs: 6) justifyto show a satisfactory reason or defense for something being done; cleared of guilt, excused Is the character justified in her anger toward her dad? 7) maintainin writing, this means the same as “asserts” or “keeps arguing that” The author maintains the notion that people will do anything for love. 8) presumeto assume in advance (before) We can presume that all seventh graders completed sixth grade.
