  1. Bergamo 2.(035) [Sustainable Renovation in the Upper City] Paolo Pesenti p.pesenti@studenti.unibg

  2. Sustainable Renovation Over the last 50 years In Italy the majority of the renovations of ancient building have been focused on the architectural and structural aspects

  3. Bergamo Upper Town: Città Alta .Upper city surrounded by Venetian walls built in 17 th century; . Old Square; .Cathedral; San Vigilio Castle…. but also : . 3100 inhabitants; . Residential properties; . Restaurants . Shops

  4. Sustainable renovation of historical buildings in the Upper City In this context the challenge is to adapt the new solutions of green energy to the ancient building without ruining their typical characteristics and beauty Manage the dichotomy new way of building and historical heritage

  5. Città Alta residential emissions The data from the SEAP 2010(Sustainable Energy Action Plan) demonstrate that the residential buildings in the upper city have one of the highest value of carbon emissions per person, equal to 8.28. Sustainable Energy Action Plan, 2010

  6. Città Alta emissions In Città Alta the majority of the houses and buildings used for commercial activities have the lowest levels of energy certification (F and G). Low energy certification of houses

  7. Città Alta emissions In Città Alta there are also a lot of churches (as the cathedral) and historical buildings used for tourism and cultural purposes (for instance museums).

  8. Weak strategies The City of Bergamo has already developed a series of strategies of energy conservation in the construction sector. The objective of SEAP is to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide of 20% by 2020. BUT…these activities focused mainly on the procedures for the construction of new buildingand nowadays a clear plan for sustainable renovationsdoes not exist

  9. What does Bergamo need? Balance

  10. Examples The applied solutions have to be customized for the different buildings and needs, in order to integrate them with the landscape and don’t be aesthetically invasive

  11. Questions . How can (historic) buildings be conserved and enhanced through energy-efficient measures? . Which strategies can be taken to adapt (historic) buildings to new functions and user demands? . Which options realize an optimum building quality with the least possible intervention? Thank You for the Attention…
