  2. Remind me: What’s a Signature Project? Please Review Your Seat Sheets A Signature Project is a 3-5 year project that the League selects to meet an under-served population. It serves a population that does not have community representation. It pushes the envelope. It provides opportunities for growth as individuals and as an organization.

  3. You might ask: Who is really served by the Project? The JLHR or the Community? • Successful Signature Projects Serve Both! • Branding • Retention of all members • Recruitment of new members • Create additional community partnerships

How did we get here? • In 2007-2008, the membership voted to reinstate the Community Research Project Development Committee • CRPD was charged with identifying a signature project during the 2008-2009 year • The membership identified: • Childhood hunger, domestic violence/sexual assault, and literacy • CRPD has spent the first half of this year researching these issues and others using the criteria that CRPD developed. Have you read the research packet created by CRPD?

Five Criteria • This Signature Project will: • Make a large impact on the women and children in our community thus aligning with our mission. • Offer a variety of volunteer opportunities and manners in which members can volunteer. • Be self sustaining. • Include partnerships with other organizations. • Provide publicity opportunities for the JLHR.

Signature Project • JLHR has been invited to become the Peninsula Cancer Institute (PCI) primary partner in the fight against Female Reproductive Cancer • JLHR would work with PCI to create educational and charitable programs focused on Female Reproductive Cancerawareness, prevention, treatment and patient care. • This opportunity meets all five criteria the CRPD committee used to evaluate proposed Signature Projects

The Partner • The Peninsula Cancer Institute (PCI) providescomprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art care to their patients and their families. • PCI integrates all forms of effective cancer care, coordinated through a team of highly trained, competent, and reliable professionals. • No patient is turned away because of inability to pay • PCI is an affiliate of the Riverside Health System • Sites of Service include Gloucester, Newport News and Williamsburg

  10. Whole Patient Approach PCI combines complementary therapies with the most up-to-date cancer treatments to support, educate and promote healing and wellness.

  12. Facts and FiguresCervical Cancer Cervical Cancer is highly treatable with early detection. Cervical Cancer is linked to certain types of a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV) Other Risk Factors include: 11% of United States women report that they do not have their annual Pap test screenings TESTING IS CRITICAL!!

  13. Facts and FiguresCervical Cancer Cervical Cancer occurs most often in women aged 30 years and older. Approx. 10,000 women are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer each year in the US. 3,700 women die in the USA each year from this disease. Women in developing countries account for 85% of both the yearly cases of Cervical Cancer (estimated at 473,000 cases worldwide) and the yearly deaths from Cervical Cancer (estimated at 253,500 deaths worldwide). In the majority of developing countries, Cervical Cancer remains the number-one cause of cancer-related deaths among women.

  14. Facts and FiguresOvarian Cancer Ovarian Cancer occurs more than 60% of the time in women over the age of 55. In 95% of Ovarian Cancer cases,there is no specific known cause. However, there are many risk factors. 1 in 71 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in their lifetime (1 in 95 will die from the cancer). In 2008, it is estimated that 15,520 women died from Ovarian Cancer in the United States. The five year survival rate for Ovarian Cancer is 45%. If found early there is a 92% survival rate. But, less than 20% of cases are found early enough for this survival rate. Detection: education, talking to your doctor, & pelvic exams.

  15. Facts and Figures Endometrial Cancer Endometrial Cancer occurs most often in women aged 45+. 50% of cases are diagnosed in the 55 to 74 age range. There is no known specific cause for Endometrial Cancer. However, there are many risk factors. 1 in 41 women will be diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer in their lifetime. In 2008, there were 40,100 new cases of Endometrial Cancer in the United States. The 5-year survival rate for women with Endometrial Cancer is 88%. But, early detection here is key!! Detection is key: education, talking to your doctor, & routine pelvic exams.

Why are we voting tonight? • What about the Community Ballot? • You are voting tonight on whether or not JLHR will enter into a partnership with PCI (Peninsula Cancer Institute) • Your vote tonight will determine how the Community Ballot will be shaped for when it is presented in March. • The Community Council is already developing preliminary ideas for the 2009-2010 Community Ballot • The membership will have the opportunity to discuss the Community Ballot during February GMM Small Group meetings Would you like us to host additional Fireside Chats before the Feb. The Ballot Process • The ballot is a fluid entity! • Each year, the Community Council creates a ballot and presents it to the membership in March for a vote • The ballot changes each year based on the needs of the community and the growth potential of existing committees. • The Community Council is working to produce a ballot that is balanced and captures the spirit of the Signature Project. • While still in draft form, we have begun developing ideas for the ballot.

Ballot Ideas • Here are some ideas that are being developed: • Dignity K.I.T.S.: Scarves and head gear for women who have lost their hair during the treatment process • Family Care K..I.T.S.: Kits for the families to use when a loved one is in treatment. Kits would contain coloring books, crayons, appropriate literature about cancer, & games. • Miles of Smiles: Events for families affected by any type of cancer • Kids Play Area at PCI • Healing Garden at PCI

  19. But what about our current partnerships? • The Community Council is committed to preserving the relationships that we’ve built with our existing community partners • Some current projects are a natural fit! • Exit strategies will be developed for those that do not fit

Meeting Our Mission? • Mission Statement • The Junior League of Hampton Roads, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. • This project seeks to not only develop the potential of women – but to SAVE THEIR LIVES through the effective action of you – our members!This project has the ability to help many generations. • The purpose of this project is to EDUCATE our community about Female Reproductive Cancers – and provide information that could inspire a woman to pick up the phone and schedule her annual exam.
