This overview explores the grim history of slavery in the Americas, highlighting the shift from Indigenous labor to the African slave trade as a response to the high death toll of native populations. The lucrative Triangular Trade fueled fortunes during the 17th to 19th centuries. It examines the brutal conditions aboard slave ships, the geography of slavery in the Caribbean and Latin America, and significant uprisings, including those in Saint-Domingue. Despite its harsh realities, slavery persisted until Brazil's abolition in 1888, marking a pivotal chapter in the fight for freedom.
