  1. INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS): An Overview

  2. Outline • What is ITS • ITS Program & user service bundles • Some of ITS applications • Detection Systems • ATIS • Incident Management System • Signal Priority & VSL • EPS & CVO • Real-time Parking Information • Enforcement • Warning systems • ITS in Lebanon

  3. What is ITS ? • Previously known as Intelligent Vehicle Highway System (IVHS) Taking advantage of modern Electronic, Communication and Control technologies to: • Inform the Traveler • Better and more timely information that will allow the traveler to make informed decisions • Improve the vehicle • Better equipment such as early warning systems, rote navigation devices and improved communication capabilities that will make driving task easier and safer • Improve the infrastructure Better traffic flow monitoring, roadside communication and devices that could eventually control the driving task

  4. What is ITS ? Benefits 1- Safety • Use “new” technology to improve: 3- Convenience 2- Efficiency

  5. The Original 6 Program Category Areas • The original 6 ITS program category areas are: • 1. ATIS (Advanced Traveler Information Systems) • 2. ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management Systems) • 3. APTS (Advanced Public Transportation Systems) • 4. CVO (Commercial Vehicle Operations) • 5. AVCS (Advanced Vehicle Control Systems) • 6. ARTS (Advanced Rural Transportation Systems)

  6. ITS Architecture Subsystems and Communications

  7. SOME OF ITS Applications • Traveler Information systems • Incident Management • Signal Priority for transit vehicles • Variable Speed Limit • Electronic Payment Systems • Credential Administration for CVO • Enforcement Technology • In-vehicle and Crash warning systems

  8. Surveillance Systems • Embedded Detectors (inductive loops) • Non-intrusive Detectors (radars and video image processing) • Closed-circuit Television Cameras CCTV • Environmental Sensors. Embedded Detector: Inductive Loop Environmental Sensors 

  9. Non- Intrusive Detection Subsystems: Video Image processing (VIP)

  10. ATIS(Advanced Traveler Information Systems) Static and real-time information on traffic conditions, schedules, road and weather conditions, special events, and tourist information. Operations essential to the success of these systems are the collection of traffic and traveler information. New technologies applied to the use and presentation of information and the communications used to effectively disseminate this information.

  11. ITS Applications:Traveler Information & Route Guidance Systems

  12. Incident Management System GOALS:` • Minimize the impact of incidents on traffic congestion. • Reduce the probability of secondary incidents. • Reduce the time required to detect ,respond, and Clear an incident

  13. Incident Management Benefits Yields significant benefits through : • Reduced vehicle delays • Increase travel speeds • Reduce vehicle emissions. • Enhanced safety to motorists: • Improved response and clearance times.

  14. Signal Priority For Transit Vehicles Local Coordination Approach

  15. Variable Speed Limit • Dynamically changing speed limit. Messages are displayed to approachingtraffic (well in advance of the queue or disturbance) • Sub-systems: • Sensors for real-time traffic speed and flow data. • Central Processor • Variable message sign (VMS) • Benefits: Smoother traffic flow, better safety and higher throughput

  16. Electronic Payment Systems (EPS) EPS Applications: • Public Transit • Parking • Road Tolling • Multipurpose The ultimate solution is the so-called "e-purse" that would permit its holder to pay for all small purchases and services within a large geographic region with a single card

  17. ITS/CVO Electronic Screening &Credentials Administration • Enables government agencies and motor carriers to conduct business transactions electronically. • This capability will be achieved through: • Automation -Develop software and information systems for electronic registration, mileage reporting, and tax and fee collections. • Networking - Develop electronic data interchange and electronic funds transfer capabilities for the movement of data and money between agencies and carriers. • Process Change - “one-stop shopping” capabilities • Base-state agreements for the administration of credentials other than registration and motor fuel tax accounts.

  18. Operation & Benefits • DSRC: Dedicated Short-Range Communication • Streamline motor carrier and tax regulatory procedures, reducing costs for both agencies and motor carriers.

  19. Real-Time Parking Information • Collect and display real-time information on parking availability for drivers • Typically part of larger efforts to promote the viability of city centers and/or projects to enhance information to travelers. • Utilize detectors to count vehicles as they enter and leave parking lots. • Display of the real-time information to drivers via variable message signs (VMS) located at “Decision Points” • Reduction of 25 percent in downtown traffic volumes related to “searching for a parking space.”

  20. ITS Applications:Enforcement Technology: Red light running Lane Enforcement

  21. In-vehicle Warning Systems

  22. Deployment of Surveillance and Warning System Problem Solving Approach Warning Sign

  23. System Objectives • Main Objectives: • Detect “No Passing” zone violating vehicles. • Warn the violator to get back into his or her lane. • Secondary Objectives • Capture violator license plate ID & vehicle type • Collection of traffic data (volume, speed,..) • Monitor the roadway for other traffic management practices (high speeding and incident management).

  24. Physical Architecture

  25. Offline Testingon Smart Road • Videotrak

  26. TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SIGNAL CONTROL ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING RAMP METERING PARKING GUIDANCE DRIVER INFORMATION CONROL CENTER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE (CCTV) VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNING ELECTRONIC TOLL COLLECTION INITIAL SYSTEM
