  2. How are Tornadoes Formed? • Warm, moist air collides with a cold front . • Warm winds rise above the cold winds. • Trapped warm air rotates. • Warm air whirls upward, spinning faster and faster. • A cyclone then forms in the sky.

US Tornado Statistics • Roughly 1,200 tornadoes occur in the US every year. • Every year tornadoes cause $400 million in damage. • Oklahoma has the third most tornadoes; Florida has the fourth most. • 25% of deaths happen in permanent homes. • People in mobile homes are 23 times more likely to die than in permanent housing.

May 3rd Oklahoma Tornado DisasterDate, Location, and Facts • There were actually 140 tornadoes that struck Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee, and Texas from May 3rd to May 6th, 2009. • The largest tornado hit in Oklahoma on May 3rd . • The May 3rd Oklahoma tornado produced the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth (318 mph)

  10. Damages • The damage cost caused by the series of tornadoes from May 3rd to May 5th was the highest in US history ($1.9 billion). • $1.2 billion in damages just from the large Oklahoma tornado. • Over 8,000 homes were badly damaged or destroyed by the Oklahoma tornado.

  11. Human Effect • Over a 72 hour period (May 3-5), there were 54 deaths • 44 of these deaths came from the May 3rd Oklahoma tornado alone. • There were 675 Oklahomans injured from this tornado.

  12. My Family’s Experience • My parents lived on the north side of Oklahoma City when the May 3rd tornado struck. • My dad was driving home just before the tornado touched down. • It was dark and very still before tornado hit. • The tornado lifted before reaching north Oklahoma City, but there were smaller tornados all around. • My parent’s home only suffered roof damage. • I was born about four months later.
