  1. Introduction to Metadata presented by the NOAA National Coastal Data Development Center a division of the National Oceanographic Data Center

  2. Topics • Metadata 101 • Geospatial Metadata Standards • FGDC CSDGM • ISO 19115 series • Reading Metadata • Discovering Data with Metadata • Metadata Resources

  3. Objectives • Explain why metadata is important • Discuss commonly used metadata standards • Discuss different metadata functions • Read CSDGM and ISO 19115-2 metadata • Use a metadata catalog to find data • Identify resources and methods for to use in developing metadata

  4. Some Metadata Terms

  5. We often use “metadata” without even knowing it Examples?

  6. Thisis the “metadata” for this What’s Missing?

  7. This is the “metadata” for this. Author(s) Boullosa, Carmen. Title(s) They're cows, we're pigs / by Carmen Boullosa Place New York : Grove Press, 1997. Physical Descr viii, 180 p ; 22 cm. Subject(s) Pirates Caribbean Area Fiction. Format Fiction The card-catalog entry is a form of metadata, but it does not address topics such as quality, accuracy, or scale. Well-written geospatial metadata describes these and many more aspects of the data.

  10. Metadata answers ??? about data…

  11. Metadata is a component of data • Provides vital information about a dataset • Not a separate entity • Critical component of a complete dataset • Describes data characteristics • Content, condition, quality • Preserves data’s usefulness through time

  12. Is this data file usable? what about Headers???

  13. Metadata describes the data … RARNUM - unique combination of species, concentration, and seasonality CONC(concentration) = Density species is found at location Season_ID =seasonality code like to the seasonal table Element - Biology group Environmental Sensitivity Index Data Metadata

  14. Metadata can reflect changes in the data … 1980 HEW Teheran British Honduras Cape Hatteras Light Mt. St. Helen West Germany 2005 HHS & HUD Tehran Belize Cape Hatteras Light Mt. St. Helen Germany

  15. Metadata serves many functions

  16. For data developers, metadata helps to….

  17. For organizations, metadata helps to…

  18. For data users, metadata helps to…

  19. Topics • Metadata 101 • Geospatial Metadata Standards • FGDC CSDGM • ISO 19115 and related standards • Reading Metadata • Discovering Data with Metadata • Metadata Resources

  20. Metadata Background: FGDC • The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) was organized in 1990 • Charged with promoting the coordinated use, sharing, and dissemination of national geospatial data • National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) • Tasked with creating a metadata standard to meet these objectives

  21. The FGDC Standard: CSDGM The Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata "... each agency shall document all new geospatial data it collects or produces, either directly or indirectly, using the standard under development by the FGDC, and make that standardized documentation electronically accessible to the Clearinghouse network.“ Executive Order 12906 Signed by President Clinton (1994)

  22. FGDC: Recognizes Transition to ISO • CSDGM will continue to have a legacy for many years • International geospatial metadata standards are emerging in the community • Agencies encouraged to transition to ISO as they are able to do so

  23. NOAA Data Management Policy • NOAA Administrative Order 212-15 • Environmental data will be visible, accessible and independently understandable to users… • Management of NOAA environmental data will be based upon an end-to-end data management lifecycle… • … approved Procedural Directives inherit the requirements and authority of this policy…

  24. NOAA EDMC Directives NOAA EDMC Data Documentation Directive Outlines Migration to ISO Standards • Documentation of… • Collections • Datasets • Services

  25. Metadata Standards Provide a uniform summary dataset description • Utilize common • Terms • Language • Structure • Defines data elements & values Process step Access constraints entity currentness domain attribute Citation Domain=Real attribute currentness Citation entity lineage Type=“free text” lineage

  26. FGDC Authored vs Endorsed Standards

  27. FGDC Authored Standards • FGDC-STD-001-1998 Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) • FGDC-STD-001.1-1999 Biological Data Profile • FGDC-STD-001.2-2001 Shoreline Profile • FGDC-STD-012-2002 Extensions for Remote Sensing Metadata (RSE) will soon be legacy

  28. FGDC Endorsed Standards • ISO 19110:2005 Geographic information - Methodology for Feature Cataloguing • ISO 19111:2007 Geographic information – Spatial referencing by coordinates • ISO 19115:2003 Geographic information – Metadata • ISO 19115-2:2009 Geographic information – Metadata – Part 2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data • ISO 19119:2005 Geographic information – Services • ISO 19139:2007 Geographic information – Metadata – XML schema implementation

  29. Topics • Metadata 101 • Geospatial Metadata Standards • FGDC CSDGM • ISO 19115 plus • Reading Metadata • Discovering Data with Metadata • Metadata Resources

  30. Text version of CSDGM record

  31. XML Version of CSDGM record

  32. HTML view of CSDGM record

  33. CSDGM Metadata Workbook • Defines the CSDGM • Section and element definitions • Domain values Graphical representation of the CSDGM production rules • How elements are grouped • Mandatory elements • Rules for repeatable elements

  34. CSDGM Graphic Representation Metadata 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Identification Information Spatial Reference Information Entity and Attribute Information Distribution Information Metadata Reference Information Data Quality Information Spatial Data Organization Information Legend Mandatory Mandatory If Applicable

  36. Reading a CSDGM Metadata Record Hands-On Exercise

  37. Example CSDGM Metadata Record Navigate to this web page: • http://www.ncddc.noaa.gov/hypoxia/products/ Select Tab for 2012 – 2010 Maps and Data • Select Metadata for CTD Locations • Answer questions about dataset using this metadata record Or, direct link: http://service.ncddc.noaa.gov/rdn/www/media/documents/hypoxia/metadata/2012-Hypoxia-Stations.html

  38. Answer these Questions… • Who created the data? • What is the format of the data? • When was the data collected? • What location is the data about? • Who can I contact to get the data? • Who provided the source data? • Was any processing done to the data? • Who wrote the metadata?

  39. Transitioning to ISO Metadata Moving Forward

  40. ISO Background • The ISO 19115 strongly resembles the ‘sections’ of the CSDGM • Documents the geographic data -OR –service • Identification • Spatial Reference • Data Quality • Distribution We are still capturing the same information!

  41. Comparing FGDC and ISO 19139 XML schema implementation 19110 19111 RSE CSDGM BIO ISO 19115 → FGDC CSDGM (FGDC-STD-001-1998) ISO 19115-2 → FGDC Remote Sensing Extensions (RSE) (FGDC-STD-012-2002) ISO 19110 → FGDC CSDGM Section 5 (Entity & Attribute Info) ISO 19111 → FGDC CSDGM Section 4 (Spatial Reference Info)

  42. New with ISO • Increased flexibility • Depicts relationships between datasets and collection level (parent/child relationships) • Standardizes descriptors through the use of codelists • Accommodates new technologies • documenting services • Accommodates international scope
