  3. Laumės (The Hags) • In ancient times they were pictured as women with hen‘s legs. • In some cases it was believed that Hags are pretty, young women who live by lakesor rivers. • They can also appear as ugly creatures which eat men or babies as cannibals.

  4. Aitvaras (The Kite) • The Kite is a household spirit. • It lives in the farmsteads and makespeople wealthy. • People imaginedthem as like a flying (shining) long sleeve, grass-snake, towel or lizard.

  5. Žaltys (The Grassnake) • Grassnakes used to live in people‘s houses. • It was believed that they are immortal supernatural beings, which patronize families.

  6. Perkūnas (The Thunder) • The Thunder is the most important Lithuanian god. • In the taleshe is usually being depicted as a militant, quick-tempered, armed with an axe, knife and arrows. • The Thunder is usually seen chasing The Devil and trying to strike it.

  7. Velnias (The Devil) • The Devil lives in wet locations: by ponds or lakes. • Italways hides himself in the ground from Thunder.

  9. The Old Man-God • Heis often being depicted on the background of daily life as a peasant. • He has an enormous creativity power and he creates the world and all useful things around.

  10. The Devil The other main character of the tales is a devil. Unlike its mythological counterpart, this one is not dangerous. It is rather a comical figure

  11. The Devil creates the world in the company of the God, but always does that unsuccessfully: Everything God creates is useful and nice. The devil imitates the God, but all of its creations are useless and ugly. Devil‘s creation: a toad. God‘s creation: a lark.
