  2. Aims for this session. • How we teach children to read • Is reading just about decoding? • Hearing reading in school • How you can help • Common concerns • Any questions? • Opening of classrooms to look at the resources available.

  3. Phonics • Some definitions- • A phoneme – This is the smallest unit of a sound in a word. • How many phonemes can you hear in the word cat? • A grapheme – These are the letters that represent the phoneme. The grapheme could be 1letter, 2 letters or more. We call these Sound Buttons.

  4. CVC words are made up of single letter sounds. c-a-td-o-gm-a-tb-e-d Blending and segmenting – splitting the words into their sounds and blending to read the unfamiliar word. n- igh-tt-r-ai-nsh-ee-p Sound buttons Phonics

  8. Mnemonics • because- birds eat cake and uncles suck eggs • people – people eat oranges penguins lay eggs • Making up your own mnemonic for tricky words, can help children to remember the spellings.

  14. 4 main strategies • Phonic knowledge • Little words in big words- e.g. Independent • Context, miss out and read words before/ after- what makes sense? • Look at the pictures for help.

  15. Make the most of every opportunity to read!

  16. Common concerns • Texts sent home not hard enough for child. • Is my child where he/she should be with regard to reading. • Child choosing same book again.
