  1. BULGARIA Dobrich Private Language School “Leonardo da Vinci” Waste recycling Project “Nature and its magic sounds” 2012-2014 20-26.10.2013 Dobrich, Bulgaria

  2. What is Recycling? Recycling means to use something again. News papers may be used to make new ones. Aluminum cans can be used to make new cans. Glass jars may be used to make new glass jars. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 1

  3. Time REQUIRED for product decomposition in nature: 2,5 months 6 months 5 years 100 years 200-500 years 10-20 years 75 years 10-12 years 300 years WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 2

  4. Benefits of recycling: 1. Recycling saves space in landfills. 2. Recycling saves natural resources. 3.Recycling reduces air and water pollution . WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 3

  5. Although paper is a biodegradable material , the sustainable management of waste gives priority to recycling. This is because of its numerous benefits. Why and how to recycle paper? • Paper packages, cartons, newspapers and magazines, notepads, napkins and other paper products are an integral part of our daily lives - 40% of municipal solid waste. • 60% less energy is used in the process of recycling old paper than in the production of new material. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 4

  6. Facts about recycling of paper waste 1tonof paper = 13 trees 90% of all cartons can be recycled Recycling 1 kg. ofpaper = 32 l. water Paper can be recycled up to 5 – 7 times. Recycling 1 tonof paper = 4 kW/helectrical energy WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 5

  7. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 6

  8. Facts about recycling of glass waste Glass is 100% recyclable 1 glass bottle = 15 W/helectrical energy Recycling of 1000 tons of glass provides 8 new jobs Over 1 ton of natural resources are saved for every ton of recycled glass WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 7

  9. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 8

  10. Facts about recycling of metal waste 1 ton of steel = 1.5 tons of iron ore 7 metal cans = 26 h. light from lamp 1 aluminum can = 3 h. of working TV 1250 kg. ofaluminum scrap = 1 ton of aluminum WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 9

  11. Facts about recycling of plastic waste 5 plastic bottles = 1 jacked 1 ton of plastic = 4500 l. of gasoline Only 27% of plastic bottles can be recycled 1 ton of plastic = energy which is needed by a household for 2 years Recycling of plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in incineration plants WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 10

  12. How is plastic recycled? • Collecting and sorting of plastic. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 11

  13. Cleaning of plastic. • Paper labels, adhesives and other impurities, which reduce the quality of the final recycled plastic, are removed. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 12

  14. Cutting of plastic • The washed plastic is directed to the rotating metal teeth which tear it into small pieces. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 13

  15. Identification and classification of plastic. • Plastic pieces are tested and given chemical abbreviations. WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 14

  16. Extrusion • This is the last stage of plastic recycling. It includes melting of washed and cut plastic and extrusion (molding and shaping of plastic granules). WASTE RECYCLING - BULGARIA - 15
