  5. Predicate Nouns • To locate a predicate noun: 1. Locate a linking verb or verb of condition. 2. Find the subject. 3. Look for something that comes after the verb that will rename the subject. It will be the predicate noun.

  6. Locating Predicate Nouns Example: The man is a doctor. (First find the linking verb. It is “is.” Then find the subject. It is “man.” Finally, look after the linking verb. Is there something to rename the man? Yes, it is “doctor.” “Doctor” is the predicate noun.) S LV PN The man is a doctor.

  8. Predicate Adjectives • To locate a predicate adjective: 1. Find a linking verb or verb of condition. 2. Locate the subject. 3. Look for a word that comes after the linking verb or verb of condition that describes the subject. That is your predicate adjective.

  9. Locating Predicate Adjectives • Example: • The skyscraper is tall. (The linking verb is “is.” The subject is “skyscraper.” After the verb is the word “tall.” It describes the skyscraper; therefore, it is the predicate adjective.) S LV PA The skyscraper is tall.

  11. Diagramming Compounds • Both predicate nouns and predicate adjectives can be made compound. This means that there can be more than one of them. They are diagrammed with a fork doo-hickey! Example: S LV PA PA We were happy and excited. happy We were and excited
