Most people with learning disabilities face daily challenges and prejudice, leading to limited control over their lives. Despite 65% wanting to work, only 1 in 5 has a job, often part-time and low-paid. Many children with learning disabilities are bullied and excluded, and half of adults live at home, lacking independence. Families caring for those with profound disabilities often experience severe strain. Guideposts advocates for choice and support, offering inclusive activities, vocational training, and respite care to help individuals lead fulfilling lives and achieve equality.

Less than 1 in 5 people with a learning disability have a job but we know at least 65% of people with a learning disability want to work . Of those people who do work, most work part-time and are low paid.

Children with a learning disability are often left out of activities by other children. 8 out of 10 children with a learning disability are bullied at school or during social activities
At least half of all adults with a learning disability live in the family home - meaning that many don't get the same chances as other people to gain independence, learn key skills and make choices about their own lives.
Less than a third of people with a learning disability have some choice of who they live with, and less than half have some choice over where they live.
7 out of 10 families caring for someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities have reached or come close to ‘breaking point' because of a lack of short break services.

At Guideposts, we work with people with learning disabilities to help them gain confidence and expand their horizons. We also work with their carers to provide short break services to give them some support and care, too. Our vision is of a society where all people are valued and have equality of opportunity.
