    1. Disorders of Fluid Balance & Blood Flow

    2. Water Necessary for life Must move from place to place which requires passageways blood vessels lymphatic vessels Also requires pressure BP osmotic pressure

    3. BP aka hemodynamic pressure Highest as blood is ejected from L ventricle & gradually decreases as it makes its way to the R atrium Determined by CO & vascular resistance BP = CO X vascular resistance Aids in blood flow & diffusion

    4. Osmotic Pressure Amount of pressure to prevent H2O movement across membrane High concentration of solute = high osmotic pressure

    7. Major Determinants of Disease Fluid moves in & out of compartments with respect to the balance of osmotic & hemodynamic pressures Injury causes increased blood flow to the injured part Blood stays within the vessel because of the physical integrity of the vessel wall & normal coagulation function Coagulation is a normal process that takes place outside of the vessel while intravascular coagulation is always pathologic Thrombosis is always intravascular & always pathologic Obstruction of arterial blood flow causes infarction Normal blood flow requires adequate BP

    8. Edema H2O moves from the vessel into tissue spaces May be due to low plasma osmotic pressure or increased intravascular pressure Anasarca is a severe, generalized edema

    9. Local edema named for the site
