Shoreline Community College Biotechnology Lab Specialist Program http://success.shoreline.edu/biotech/ Guy Hamilton Ph.D. Program Directorghamilton@shoreline.edu Emphasis of Program -Prepare students for careers in biotechnology research and development -Provide practical, “hands-on” learning and familiarity with cutting edge techniques, technologies, and equipment Flexible Student Access -AAAS degree program. A two-year program for those without a science background. The first year curriculum provides a foundation in math and basic sciences. The second year focuses on applied biotechnology. -Certificate Program.Students with prior Science degrees and/or experience may enter the program and complete the second year course sequence. -Modular short courses. Students with Biotech experience may enroll in these courses to receive advanced training in several topics

  2. Shoreline Biotech Lab Facilities -3000 square feet of teaching lab space dedicated to Biotechnology students completely renovated in 2004. -Facilities include molecular biology/immunology lab, tissue culture lab and computer access for students. http://success.shoreline.edu/biotech/

Shoreline Biotech Core Curriculum http://success.shoreline.edu/biotech/ Media and Solution Prep Molecular Diagnostics Molecular Biology Bioinformatics Inorganic Chemistry series for majors HPLC Recombinant DNA Flow Cytometry Immunology Protein Techniques Short Course Modules - 1 or 2 credit courses to provide advanced training. Open for incumbant worker training. Tissue Culture Internship Skills Acquired Molecular Biology. Media and buffer preparation, sterile technique, recombinant DNA techniques, agarose and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, PCR, protein expression and purification, and HPLC. Immunology and Tissue Culture - Western Blotting, ELISA, Flow Cytometry, affinity purification of antibodies, Biotin labeling of proteins.

Outreach Opportunities for Middle and High Schools Visits to School -Science Classroom-stay for all sections, hands-on activity addressing your current curriculum. -Career fairs or Presentations Visits to Shoreline CC -Arrange full campus tour with biotechnology lab. -Can plan for a larger group with rotations -Smaller groups can arrange for lab activities.

SCC Outreach goals moving forward Continue Outreach to Schools Create a Biotechnology Pathway for underserved and/or middle achieving students Pathway includes: Biotechnology Summer Student Experience (BSSE) Camp to Biotech (C2B) Continue to expand the Bruce Wallace Lab Program to Schools outside of the greater Seattle Area
