  5. Capital punishment by the numbers $7.4 billion: 2006-06 budget for the California Corrections Department.$250 million: Average cost of 11 executions in 27 years.$114 million: Costs of death penalty to taxpayers.$34,150: Average annual cost of housing an inmate in state prison

  6. Breaking the numbers down with simple arithmetic shows that life in prison is much cheaper than executing an individual. If you take the $250,000,000.00 it cost the State of California to execute 11 offenders and divide that sum by the quantity you will see that it cost the State of California $22,727,272.00 to execute each offender. Now if you take an offender and we will say he is going to be sentenced to life in prison and lets take an extreme example and say he will live 80 years after he is sentenced, then we multiply the average cost of incarceration per year of $34,150.00 by 80, we will see that it will only cost $2,732,000.00 to incarcerate the individual. This equates to a savings of $19,995,272.00 per execution.
