  1. Terrestrial Environments Day 2 September 10th/11th, 2013

  2. Objectives: • I can identify and describe terrestrial environments and the effects of environmental factors on organisms. Focus Question: • What environmental factors affect the growth of seeds?

  3. Vocabulary Review • Environment  Everything, both living and non-living, that surrounds and influences an organism. • Terrestrial Environment  Terrestrial Environments  Environments found on land. • Aquatic Environment  Environments found in water. • Forests  Areas of plant growth that are wild and uncontrolled/unplanned. • Gardens  A garden is an outdoor area that has been planned and planted in a specific organization. • Terrariums  Are small planted areas that are completely enclosed and form their own little habitat. • Organisms  Any living thing, including plants or animals. • Environmental Factors  Biotic (living) and Aboiotic (non-Living) parts of the environment.

  4. Environmental Factors • Biotic (living) Factors: • Plants • Animals • Abiotic (non-living) Factors: • Sun • Air • Water • Soil • Rocks & Minerals • Temperature & Climate • Chemicals

  5. Setting up & Planning a Terrarium • What are we planting? • Corn • Peas • Barley • Radish • Clover • How much will we plant? • 5 seeds of corn, peas, barley, and radish. • 1 mini-spoonful of tiny clover seeds.

  6. Terrarium Map Key Corn Peas Barley Radish Clover

  7. Terrarium Map Key Corn Peas Barley Radish Clover

  8. Setting up a Terrarium • Materials: • Sticky Note • Terrarium • Terrarium Lid with Plastic Wrap • 1 liter of soil • 5 corn seeds • 5 pea seeds • 5 barley seeds • 5 radish seeds • 1 mini spoon of clover seeds • 100mL beaker • Water • Popsicle stick • Procedures: • Get a sticky note. Write down the names of your group members. Put the sticky note on the front of your terrarium. • Pour the soil into your terrarium and spread it out. • Following your plan, plant your seeds. Use the popsicle seed to dig holes. • Using a 100mL beaker, water your plants (keep track of how much water you use). • Cover your terrarium.

  9. Observation # 1 • In your journal, record today’s date (5/2) and mark it as day 1. • Record your observations of what you did to set up your terrarium and begin this investigation. • We planted our terrarium following our plan. • We added ____mL of water, then sealed the terrarium. • We placed the terrarium on the windowsill.

  10. What Makes Up a Terrarium? Lid Terrarium • Water Sunlight • Plants Soil

  11. Biotic or Abiotic Factors? Terrarium • Water Abiotic Sunlight • Abiotic • Plants Soil Biotic • Abiotic Abiotic

  12. Key Questions • How do you determine what is in an environment? • An environment is everything that surrounds and influences an organism. • How do we distinguish one thing from another? • Each part of an environment, biotic or abiotic, is recognized as an environmental factor.

  13. Review Our Objectives: • I can identify and describe terrestrial environments and the effects of environmental factors on organisms. Review the Focus Question: • What environmental factors affect the growth of seeds?
