  2. Native Americans • Settlers moving West, American Indians leaders trying to figure out the best way to deal • One Native American leader,Blackhawk, resist all attempts to take NA land

Black Hawk War • NA’s vs US settlers in Illinois • US officials order the removal of all NA’s from state • Black Hawk refuses to leave • NA’s waving white flag, US fires on them • Begin raids on American settlements • 1832: Blackhawk surrenders • By 1850 the US had removed NA’s living in Northwest territory

  4. Indian Removal Act • Indians in the Southeast should continue moving west • Under Jackson, congress passes Indian Removal Act • Removal of American Indians east of the Mississippi • Indian territory=Oklahoma • Bureau of Indian Affairs: oversees federal policy toward American Indians

  5. Cherokee Nation • Adopting culture of white people: learned how to read and write English • Sequoya: develops writing system • Created a gov. with an election system • John Ross: elected as leader

  6. Trail of Tears • Gold was discovered on their land( GA) • Sue state (independent nation) • Worcester vs. Georgia: only federal govt. has control over Cherokee • Georgia ignores court ruling….Jackson does nothing about it • Spring 1838: US troops begin removing to Indian Territory • Many hide in NC, 800 mile march, ¼ die

  7. 2nd Seminole war • Seminole fight with armed resistance • Seminole leaders forced to sign treaty • 1. Leave Florida within 3 years • 2.Seminole of African Ancestry =runaway slave • Seminole ignore treaty • After millions of dollars, US give up fight

  8. Industrial Revolution • Period of rapid growth in the use of machines and manufactured products • Faster and cheaper waysOccurred during the mid 1700’s • Population is growing, Artisans cannot meet this demand

  9. Effects • Textiles: Spinning Jenny increased the spread of thread productionfactories being built • Mass Production: making of large numbers of identical goods • Moved nation away from dependence • Steam power: build factories away from streams

  10. Factory Workers • Hired entire families for labor at a low cost • Fast and dangerous machinery and long work days • Artisans having to compete with machine • Unions and strikes: Fighting for reform

  11. Transportation Rev • Period of improvement in speed and cost of transportation • Robert Fulton: sends steamboat up the Hudson Riversteamboat ferry service (didn’t rely on wind power) • Railroad companies become one of the most powerful businesses (fastest method of transportation)

  12. Gibbons V. Ogden • 1st supreme court ruling on trade between states • Gibbons: federal license to operate steamboat, run steamboat btwn NY and NJ • Ogden: already has monopoly on steamboat business on NY • Ogden sues Gibbon and wins, Gibbons appeals case • Federal law overrules state law

  13. Inventions • Samuel Morse: creates telegraph and Morse Code (send and receive telegraphs many words per minute) • John Deere: creates steel plow (helps plow rich, thick soil) • Isaac Singer: improved sewing machine • Iceboxes available • Matches
