Vocabulary • hubris (noun) • extreme pride, arrogance or sense of self-importance • “Hubris often indicates a loss of touch with reality and overestimating one's own competence or capabilities, especially for people in positions of power. [In ancient Greece] the word was also used to describe actions of those who challenged the gods or their laws, especially in Greek tragedy, resulting in the protagonist's downfall” (www.wikipedia.com). • The saying "pride goes before a fall" sums up the meaning—and often the consequences--of hubris. It is also referred to as "pride that blinds“ because hubris often blinds a person to what is true or real.

  4. Vocabulary • pantheism (noun) • Belief that “God” and the universe (nature) are one and the same. • The central ideas are the universe as an all-encompassing unity and the ‘sacredness’ of Nature” (www.wikipedia.com). • The Over-soul of Transcendentalism is a pantheistic idea and ideal.

Root word • pan meaning “all" • theo meaning "God“ • Pantheism literally means “all is God.” OTHER WORDS USING THIS ROOT: • Pan-American – pertaining to all of the countries or people of north, central and south America • panacea - a cure all; a solution for all difficulties • pan + akes (cure) • pandemic – prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world • [pan + demos (people)]

  6. HOMEWORK: Bring in a picture of a place in “nature” that is important to you. • Picture = photo, printout, drawing, collage, etc. • This picture will be displayed on the bulletin board.
