Bellringer 1 • Please come and retrieve your binder from the front of the classroom. • Be quiet • Be respectful of other classmates binders • Wait patiently • I need 3 volunteers to help pass out papers • All papers being passed out today go in Unit 2 Tab • Make sure Unit 1 is organized in alphabetical order • Get tabs!!! • When you get your bubble sheet back make sure to mark your Unit 1 Quiz and Unit 1 Test scores on the graph

Evaluate, take, and defend positions on the development of U.S. foreign policy during the early nineteenth century (e.g., Embargo Act, Monroe Doctrine) Learning Targets I can compare/contrast the first four presidents’ foreign policies and determine how each impacted the U.S. Essential Question (exit slip) Which of the first four presidents had the most positive impact on the United States? Defend your answer.

Notes Directions • Use the handout provided to fill out the chart on handout 2A • For each president- • Summarize the problems – why is it a problem for the U.S. • Summarize his solutions – how is made better or worse for the U.S. • Remember- a summary is a condensed explantion of the main idea

George Washington’s Problem and Solution Problem Solution • Britain declares war on France to stop revolution from spreading • Problem: We have a treaty with France from the Revolutionary War! • European alliances = war! • America is not prepared to go to war with the big dogs of Europe! • Economics= Trader concerns! • America makes money from trade: picking sides jeopardizes that trade • Neutrality: staying out of war/not aiding any side • Geographic isolation • Two oceans = natural protection from European affairs

John Adam’s Problem Solution • France thinks we are allying with Britain • A stab in the back after they helped us win our Revolutionary war • France starts attacking our trade ships • XYZ Affair- 3 french diplomats (x,y and z- they must go unamed) demand money from the US to stop attacking Started to prepare for war against France (He was a Federalist who was anti-French) France couldn’t afford another war France signed a peace treaty with U.S.

  17. James Monroe In Latin American it’s a period of Revolution and liberation Countries Venezuela and Brazil have gained their independence from countries like Spain and Portugal. James Monroe recognizes these new independent countries in Latin America He fears that countries like France and Britain will try to take control of area in Latin America He writes a document to share with the world- “The Monroe Doctrine”
