George Washington’s Problem and Solution Problem Solution • Britain declares war on France to stop revolution from spreading • Problem: We have a treaty with France from the Revolutionary War! • European alliances = war! • America is not prepared to go to war with the big dogs of Europe! • Economics= Trader concerns! • America makes money from trade: picking sides jeopardizes that trade • Neutrality: staying out of war/not aiding any side • Geographic isolation • Two oceans = natural protection from European affairs

19. James Monroe In Latin American it’s a period of Revolution and liberation Countries Venezuela and Brazil have gained their independence from countries like Spain and Portugal. James Monroe recognizes these new independent countries in Latin America He fears that countries like France and Britain will try to take control of area in Latin America He writes a document to share with the world- “The Monroe Doctrine”
