About the Beaufort Wind Scale The Beaufort Wind Force Scale was invented in 1805 by a sailor called Sir Francis Beaufort, so it was named after him. In those days the strength of the wind was very important for sailing ships. The wind scale was really to help sea goers describe the wind strength in a common format. In later years the scale was modified to describe conditions on land. The wind scale is used by many weather watchers around the world. There are important terms and phrases that have specific meaning and tell people how fast the wind is.
