  3. Introducing Our Teacher • She has been teaching 5th grade for 7 years • She was born and raised in Great Falls. Graduated from CMR. Obtained Bachelor’s Degree from MSU-Northern. Received Master’s Degree from Walden University • She is a member of the Montana Council for History and Civics Education • She has been married for 13 years and has two children 3

  4. Classroom Economy • We all have a job and get paid monthly • We pay rent on our desk and locker • Earn and lose money for behavior, being prepared, having assignments completed, etc. • Spend and earn money through auctions • Keep a checking account and write checks 4

  5. We need to READ! • The only way to become a better reader is to READ! • Everyday in class • Set a goal for reading at home (calendar) • Test and earn points on books • Focus on comprehension • Vocabulary is power! 5

  6. Math - New Common Core Curriculum - More depth - Most work will be done in class with minimal homework -Students must know multiplication facts -Grades based on homework completion, notebook, quizzes and tests 6

  7. Social Studies • Note taking skills • Projects • Research • Unit Tests • Themes include: ancient cultures, explorers, colonization, American Revolution, creation of United States 7

  8. Science • Hands on! • If students miss a day it is very difficult to make up. • Variables, Levers and Pulleys, Food and Nutrition • Grades based on participation, notebook, tests 8

  9. Homework • - Spelling Soup • - Math Practice • - Any work not completed during class time • - Some research and special projects • - AR calendar 9

  10. Instrumental • Give it a try! • Instruments can be purchased at local music stores, rented from stores, rented from the school • Reduced/Free rentals from schools if you qualify • Playing an instrument wakes up the brain! 10

  11. Communication • Your child will call or deliver correspondence • Planner requires daily signature • Wednesday’s behavior card with tally sheet attached • Email or call Mrs. Douglas 11

  13. Field Trips • StarBase: Montana Air National Guard 5 day trip September 24th – 28th • Charlie Russell Museum: write essay • Great Falls Youth Symphony: Civic Center • I will request parent chaperones but space will be limited 13
