Reflections on Good Teaching and Path to Expertise

In this reflection, I explore the qualities of effective teachers, identifying key traits such as empathy, adaptability, and a passion for learning. I discuss the challenging aspects of teaching, such as managing diverse learning needs and maintaining engagement. My journey to expertise involved persistent practice and learning through trial and error, where working with mentors and setting concrete goals were crucial. I emphasize the importance of social connections and self-awareness in overcoming obstacles and staying committed to professional growth.

  2. Reflections In a few paragraphs, reflect on the following questions: • What do good teachers do? • What are the most challenging aspects of teaching?

  3. Expertise • How did you come to expertise in this domain? What are the characteristics of this process? • How did you handle difficulties?

  4. Thoughts on Expertise • Critical to be interested in the topic • See improvement through practice, repetition, putting in time • Learn through trial and error, making mistakes • Helpful to work with an expert, especially in a hands-on way (although what is most helpful depends on the learner) and getting specific feedback • Important to have a concrete goal in mind and a way of measuring where you are relative to it, self-awareness with regard to a standard • Social connections might help you stick with it, especially at the beginning • When you get stuck, it’s sometimes helpful to dissociate or separate from it for awhile
