  1. HOMELESS BIRD CONNECTIONS TO INDIA’S CULTURE Marilie Kalff, Grade 4, February 20, 2013

  2. Book Summary ofHomeless Bird Homeless Bird is a story set in India about a girl named Koly. She is thirteen years old. In the story Koly has lots of troubles. The story begins when Koly marries Hari.It was an arranged marriage set up by Koly’s parents. Hari was very sick. Koly lived with her sass (Mother in Law), sassur (Father in Law), Hari, and Chandra [Hari’s sister]. Koly had to do hard work and sass was mean to her. One day Koly found out that Hari’s family lied to her about Hari’s age just to get her dowry to bring Hari to Varanasi. They thought the Ganges river would help him get better. But he didn’t get better and Hari died. Now Koly is a widow. The days went on with sasses scolding her, sassur teaching her to read and Chandra’s friendship. Later in the story Chandra gets a husband and sassur died. Now Koly is with sass. After sassur’s death and Chandra getting married, sass one day came back with a paper from her brother. He asked if she would want to stay with him. She asked Koly to stay with her, but first they would stay a night at Vridavan. At Vridavana rickshaw boy, Raji told Koly she was left alone. Koly slept on a doorstep. But after a week Raji brought her to a widow’s house. She met Tanu a widow , and other widows and MaaKamala.Maa Kamala gives Koly a job. One day the owner of the house came and she saw Koly’s quilt she made for her dowry. Koly got a new job embroidering and she loved it. Koly taught Raji how to read. Koly met a friend at her work Mala, but soon, she found out that she steals. In the end, Koly marries Raji.

  3. Claim Homeless Bird accurately shows different cultural practices in India.

  4. Evidence In the book Homeless Bird, Koly’s parents decide that she has to get a husbandat the age of thirteen. Koly’s father sends an advertisement for a husband. The Mehta’s family accepted. Koly had to go to the Mehta’s family and live there. It relates to India because in India, some people have arranged marriages and the wife has to go to the husband’s family.

  5. Evidence Homeless Bird shows cultural events that are also true in real India. Like in the book Homeless Bird, when Hari dies, Koly has to wear a white sari to show that she is a widow. Just as in real India, widows have to wear white saris. They have to wear white saris instead of colorful because that’s their tradition.

  6. Evidence In the book Homeless Bird, Koly has to give a dowry to Hari’s family. When a wife goes to their husband’s family, the wife’s family has to give a dowry to the husband’s family. A dowry can also include propety or money. They give it because it is a tradition of the Hindu religion.

  7. Evidence In the story Homeless Bird, when Hari goes to Varanasi to bathe him in the Ganges River. To try to get him better because he was really sick. He would also be lucky if he dies in Varanasi, because they believe that then his ashes would be free. In real India people go to Varanasi for hope to get them better by bathing in the sacred Ganges River.

  8. Evidence In the book Homeless Bird, on special occasions, they have lots of different kind of traditional food. Like on the marriages, they have lots of different food. They have rice, samosas, and chapatis and lots more. It is also polite in Hindu families that the men eat first, and the food is really important in Indian culture.

  9. Evidence In the book Homeless Bird, they show lots of tradional festivals. Like in Febuaray, it was Holi and Koly, Chandra, and sass went to the city. People threw red powder at them. It relates to real India because they do it. They do it because it is their religion, and it shows respect. In India they have a day when it is Krishna’s birthday and in the book, it is also Krishna’s birthday one day and they celebrated it. The lord Krishna is a Hindu god.

  10. Conclusion Homeless Bird, shows lots of cultural practices. These include when they go to Varanasi, the food they eat, and the arranged marriages. It is also present when Koly is a widow, the dowry Koly gives, and the festivals that are celebrated. All of these practices all connect to India. So, Homeless Bird accurately shows different cultural practices in India.

  11. Story Reflection I thought Homeless Bird was really interesting. Every place where Koly went to she had troubles. When I was reading the book, I was imagining Koly’s troubles and how she felt. In the book, there were lots of difficult words, so I used a dictionary. In some chapters I was imagining me as Koly, and what I would do if I was her. When I was reading the first chapter I was really excited for reading chapter 2. But, when I was further in the book, by some moments I felt like putting the book down and not reading it any more because it was so sad. But in the end, I found out that there was a happy ending:Koly married for love to Raji.
