Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) A new approach to differentiation and remediation
Warm Up On your chart paper, make a list of all the things you know about Response to Instruction and Intervention. Use only one color marker.
Agenda and Objectives • TWBAT • Define RTI2 and list its key components. • Explain how RTI2 implementation will shape instruction. • Utilize AIMSweb as a screening and progress monitoring tool Agenda: Warm Up Agenda and Objectives Defining RTI2 The Intervention Block The RTI2 Calendar AIMSweb Modules
Defining RTI2 Definition: Examine the RTI2 Cheat Sheet. Turn to a shoulder partner and share an “aha” that you learned from the sheet.
The Key Components of RTI2 • Universal Screening: All students a measured against a nationally normed data. • Three Tiers of Intervention • Tier 1: In class differentiation for all students. • Tier 2: The intervention block for 25% of diverse learners • Tier 3: Intensive remediation • Progress Monitoring: Students in need of intervention a monitored on a regular basis. • Benchmarking: The entire school is benchmarked throughout the year. (Like our DEA)
Skills-Based vs. Standards-Based • The old intervention model • Students screened using TCAP scores • Interventions were standards based • Additional instruction, activities, and practice of standards • Special Education remediated skills and provided study support. • The new intervention model • Students screened using AIMSweb • Tier II Intervention and Design • Focus will be on skills, not standards • There will be a greater emphasis on data in between benchmarks

Intervention Students will be sorted into tier II and III interventions if they fall below the 25th %ile in any skill area. Areas of deficit will be prioritized accordingly: Fluency, Comprehension, Math Comp, Math Applied, Writing Study Island is the first intervention. Other follow-up interventions include V-Math, West Virginia Phonics, and Wilson Reading
Progress Monitoring All students sorted into tier II and tier III interventions must be progress monitored in their area of deficit. Students in tier II need progress monitoring bi-weekly. Students in tier III need progress monitoring weekly. If a student does not make progress in 4-5 weeks, a new intervention must be put into place.
A Few More Words on Interventions An intervention must be researched based. It must be implemented with fidelity. Interventions must be targeted toward skills, not standards. Again, if there is no progress on a skill after 4-5 weeks, a new intervention must be implemented and documented.
The RTI2 Calendar Universal Screening: August 13-September 3 Intervention Launch: Early September Ongoing progress monitoring Benchmark 1: November 10-17 Benchmark 2: February 2-9 Benchmark 3: May 11
What do we know now? • * Examine your RTI sheet from the beginning of this session. • Refer to the RTI cheat sheet. • What has changed? • Use a different colored marker to indicate what you learned. • Cross out any misconceptions. • NOW LET’S LOOK AT AIMSWEB!!
