  1. Today • Finish Warm-up • Put everything on floor except something to write with. • Open big red Literature book to page 294

  2. Background info… • Published in 1843 • First-person (Paranormal activity) • Narration from the perspective of "I" or "We." Narrators may be involved with the action or may simply observe it; they may also be reliable or unreliable. • Edgar Allen Poe • Died at 40 • Lived/Died in poverty • Unstable?

  3. The Culture • Being proper (high society) • Keeping to yourself • Living in close quarters

  4. The Character • The Narrator • Mentally unstable? • Policies changed for the treatment of the insane (before people were shunned and mistreated) • The Narrator suffers from “Over-acuteness of the senses (nervousness).”

  5. Reliable vs Unreliable? • Reliable narrator- reflects the truth that the author is trying to share; does not involve personal feelings. • Unreliable narrator- credibility has been compromised; shows bias; makes assumptions. • Ex. Fight club

  6. Conflict & Culture • Internal conflict (man vs himself), External conflict (man vs society) • What is the conflict? • Culture does not treat mentally insane people very well. Do you think that has something to do with his behavior?

  7. Traits • Physical traits (how he looks, what he wears) • Personality traits (attitudes, thoughts, feelings) • Behavioral Traits (how he acts, things that he does)
