  2. Who is it? Edmond Andros • Appointed by James II as royal governor of the Dominion of New England in the late 1680s. He angered colonists by ending representative assemblies. Colonists jailed him when James was overthrown.

  3. Who is it? Edward Braddock • In 1755 marched two regiments of British troops to attack Fort Duquesne was defeated by the French and died as a result of the battle

  4. Who is it? Jonathan Edwards • One of the best known preachers of the Great Awakening in 1730s and 1740s, terrified listeners with images of God’s anger but promised they could be saved

  5. Who is it? Benjamin Franklin • Most famous American of the 18th century; printer, scientist, inventor, proposed the Albany Plan of Union

  6. Who is it? King James II • Became king in 1685 and wanted to rule England and its colonies with total authority. He combined all northern colonies. Was overthrown in 1689 in favor of his daughter and her husband

  7. Who is it? John Locke • English philosopher that argued in the 1690s that people have the natural right of life, liberty, and property.

  8. Who is it? Louis Montcalm • Commander of French forces in America, died after the Battle of Quebec from wounds received in the losing cause

  9. Who is it? William Pitt • Britain’s new secretary of state that took office in 1757 determined to win the war and put British resources into it

  10. Who is it? Pontiac • Ottawa leader who led a revolt against white settlers and forts west of the Appalachian Mountains in 1763

  11. Who is it? George Washington • Young Virginian sent to take a French fort in 1753. He was defeated

  12. Who is it? William (III) Mary (II) • Became king and queen of England as a result of the Glorious Revolution in 1689. Promised major political changes in England

  13. Who is it? George Whitefield • Drew thousands of people to his sermons and raised funds to start a home for orphans in the 1740s

  14. Who is it? James Wolfe • British general that commanded the forces that defeated the French in the battle that turned the war in favor of the British

  15. Who is it? • His trial in 1735 for criticizing the royal governor helped establish the right of freedom of the press John Peter Zenger
