  1. Research Project Oral Presentation Power Point or Essay Due February 20th, 2013

  2. Step 1 - Choose a Topic and Research it • We will go to computer lab on 3 occasions, you may work at home, too. Bring your flash- drive! • Find : • data/ statistics (1), • interesting facts (2), • specific reasons (2) • and examples (1) • from valid and reliable sources that have an author, renown company/agency/person, and publishing date.

  3. Step 2 – Organize all your researched information • This will be a persuasive research. In other words, you have to convince us of your topic! You need to read at least 15 articles, become an expert on your topic. • You will present a power point or a two page essay. • Organize by putting your information on index cards or on the boxed page. • MLA on the front and your valued information on the back • One index card for your statistic or data • One index card for your interesting fact #1 • One index card for your interesting fact #2 • One index card for your specific reason #1 • One index card for your specific reason #2 • One index card for your specific example

  4. If you decide on a power point: • 9 – 12 slides • Title page slide • Thesis statement slide( What are you proving? What 3 elements will you use to prove it?) • Slides with your: with explanations of each • data/ statistics (1), • interesting facts (2), • specific reasons (2) • and examples (1) And in- text citation • Works Cited

  5. If you decide on writing the Essay • Cover page • 2 page essay • 6-9 paragraphs • Include the following with explanations: • data/ statistics (1), • interesting facts (2), • specific reasons (2) • and examples (1) And in- text citation • Plus Work Cited Page • 4 pages total

  6. Review your Essay or Power Point • Get ready to present! Do not read your power point or essay. Rubric:

  8. # 1 • Many people believe that television violence has a negative effect on society because it promotes violence, disrespect and disregard for other people . State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons. # 2 • Medical researchers, cosmetic companies, and others often perform experiments on animals. Many people feel that experimentation on animals is wrong and should be stopped immediately because animals do feel pain, and there are other alternatives. State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons.

  9. # 3 • Since the cloning of the sheep Dolly, there has been much debate over whether or not human beings should be cloned. Many people feel this is a violation of the natural order of things and that all research in the area of human cloning should be banned. Others feel that is a natural progression of science and human evolution and that research in the area of human cloning should be a priority. State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons.

  10. # 4 • According to some health organizations, many foods on our grocery store shelves are made with genetically modified ingredients. Most of these foods, however, do not have GMO (genetically modified organism) label. Do you think there should be a law requiring manufacturers to label foods containing GMOs? State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons.

  11. # 5 • Is “an eye for an eye” a good basis for determining an appropriate punishment? Why or why not? What types of punishments are used today? Is it working. State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons. # 6 • Some people think that school cafeterias should be required to provide low-fat and/or vegetarian lunch options to accommodate the eating habits of all students. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your position and persuade us by using specific reasons and examples as support.

  12. # 7 • Every year, millions of people visit zoos around the world. But some people believe that zoos are inhumane and that animals should not be kept in captivity. Do you agree? State your position and persuade us by explain your reasons. # 8 • Imagine that you have been asked to help raise money for a local charity. Choose a charity and explain why people should contribute to the fundraising campaign for that particular charity. Persuade us by explaining your reasoning.

  13. # 9 • Politicians come from all sorts of professional backgrounds, from lawyers and chief executive officers to actors and even professional wrestlers. On a few notable occasions, politicians with criminal backgrounds have even been elected. In your opinion, should candidates with a criminal record be allowed to run for office? State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons.

  14. # 10 • “Original” fairy tales, like those recorded by the Brothers Grimm, often contain violence. Some literary critics and child psychologists believe these tales are good for children because they address children’s real fears, feelings, and desires. Others argue that contemporary “sanitized” fairy tales still convey the main themes of the tales and are far more appropriate for children. State your position and persuade us by explaining your reasons.
