  1. Research Project GabbieReasor 3/6/12 Block 2

  2. 1. Introduction Paragraph • Thesis Statement: Corporations can find loopholes in Environmental laws by testing during certain times/seasons during the year, by changing the land before species have a chance to adapt or become inhabitants in it, and by influencing the laws that are passed themselves.

  3. 1st Body Paragraph Topic Sentence: Some objectives that lets us determine the health of an ecosystem and land by testing during certain seasons are the condition of Macropyhtes and other biological indicators in the area, as well as the patterns of animal/wildlife migration. Main Point 1: Testing for Macropyhtes and other biological indicators.

  4. 1st Body Paragraph • Evidence to support MP 1: Testing for Macrophytes during certain times of the year, gives us a solid idea of the type of wildlife/biodiversity that can be found in that area. Macrophytes are biological indicators that produce oxygen for the ecosystem and are part of a healthy habitat. Macropyhtes also controls pest populations, which has the ability to decrease the incidence of insect-borne diseases. One example of an indicator species is the pepper moth, which, depending on its color, indicates the amount of pollution in in the area.

  5. Cont. • - higher frequency of light pepper moths=little pollution • -higher frequency of dark pepper moths=high pollution • -decrease in light pepper moths=pollution is beginning to accumulate.

  6. 1st Body Paragraph • Main Point 2: Animal/Wildlife Migration. • Evidence to support MP 2: Depending upon whether the terrain is an area that is migrated to during specific seasons, can help determine what wildlife may exist there, or what resources are there that biodiversity is attracted to.

  7. 2nd Body paragraph • Topic Sentence: Corporations can influence what species will be able to live in a certain area by habitat degradation and fragmentation or by introducing a foreign species. • Main Point 1: If the quality of the habitat is destroyed by Corporations, it will drive out existing species leaving it uninhabitable for them. • Evidence to support MP 1: Forest clearing and resource extracting is rendering territory unable of supporting their local ecosystems, directly forcing out wildlife.

  8. Cont. • Main Point 2: The introduction of foreign species causes an entire ecosystem to adapt, by changing ecological relationships, territory, and resource availability. • Evidence to support MP 2: Foreign species have a greater chance of survival, because they have no natural enemies and grows more quickly in less favorable or native conditions. Furthermore, this leads to increased competition for resources by native species. • -Typically, exotic species are introduced into marine areas by transplanting or commercial shipping. It has been reported that ship ballast water is responsible for the transport of approximately 3,000 species worldwide each day.

  9. 3rd Body Paragraph • Topic Sentence: Corporations have the ability to influence the environmental laws that are passed by hiring lobbies and funding certain campaigns along with putting out deceptive PR, when in actuality some of their practices may not be truthful. • Main Point 1: Lobbies and Campaign funds have the ability to change votes. • Evidence to support MP 1: Some Corporations have the ability to fund lobbies that will encourage officials to vote in their favor on certain bills or laws passed, in order for them to continue to practice a certain war and more. One way they can accomplish this is through revolving door lobbyists.

  10. Cont. • Main Point 2: Some Corporations put out deceptive PR. • Evidence to support MP 2: Deceptive PR practices are regulated by the federal government through the BBB, EPA, and more; however, is dangerous because harmful practices may be occurring and stopped fast enough. Some policies that we already have in place is the NEPA, weekly environmental impact statements, SEP’s ,and more.

  11. Conclusion • Conclusion: Environmental laws need to be made stronger so deceptive and irresponsible Corporations can’t find loopholes to get around, such as not thoroughly testing throughout different times of the year, having a chance to change the environment before any species return or adapt to it, and by influencing the laws themselves that are passed.
