  1. Salting Roads • During the winter, salt is sprinkled over icy roads. Plants growing along the sides of these roads are often seriously damaged or even killed. The leaves on these plants look similar to the leaves on plants that have been through a very hot, dry summer. The higher-than-normal salt concentration in these plants’ external environments causes their cells to lose water through osmosis. Without sufficient water, the plants die.
