  2. Jainism • Jainism was born in India about the same period as Buddhism. It was established by Mahavira in about 500 B.C. • Belief in reincarnation which eventually leads to liberation • Focus on non-violence is its main core , not religious philosophy or almighty worship • Jains believe that every thing has life, including stones, sand, trees • Vegetarians; wish to prevent hurting any being; won’t walk in fields with insects to prevent stepping on them; they cover their mouth to prevent the possibility of swallowing small invisible microbes; they avoid agricultural work opting for professions like banking & business

  3. Sikhism • Sikhs are the disciples of God who follow the writings and teachings of the Ten Sikh Gurus • The Guru Granth Sahibis the religious text of Sikhism

  4. The most significant historical religious center for the Sikhs is Harmiandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) at Amritsar in the state of Punjab in northern India.

  5. Philosophy and Beliefs • There is only One God. He is the same God for all people of all religions. • The soul goes through cycles of births and deaths before it reaches human form. The goal of life is to lead an exemplary existence so that one may merge with God. • The true path to achieving salvation and merging with God includes living the life of a householder, earning an honest living and avoiding worldly temptations and sins. • Sikhism preaches that people of different races, religions, and sex are all equal in the eyes of God. Women can participate in any religious function or perform any Sikh ceremony or lead the congregation in prayer.
