What does a PBL Teacher Look Like? • Typically do not lead instructional activities • Participate in projects as peers than classroom managers • Exert less CONTROL (turn it over to the students) “Unlearn the idea that teaching was about my content; I had to learn it was about their thinking”
PBL Teachers MUST provide: • Mobility and Choice • Group Work and out of Classroom Work • Culminate in a procedurally COMPLEX task • Students to find their OWN sources • Students the opportunity to conduct OWN research • Students with Daily Feedback http://www.bie.org/videos/video/wing_project_overview_2_of_2
Essential Management Tools: • Group Contracts – enforce rules, student developed • Group Roles – identifiable and specific • Progress Charts – Bigger the better • Group Folders • Daily logs – always placed in folders • RUBRICS!!!!!!
Management Tips • Allow 20% over run on allotted time • Teach Adult Time Management – takes 1-2 projects (Daily/Task Logs) • Incorporate Technology • Check points • Early = Daily Checks • 2-4 projects later – report every 2-3 classes

4 Stages of Successful PBL • Define – Provide Engaging Question • Plan – Break Down into Small Manageable Chunks & Stages • Do – Explore Open Ended Questions • Review – Evaluation & Reflection
