Can Facial Expressions Reveal Lies? A Study on Truthfulness and Deception Detection

This project investigates whether facial expressions can indicate if someone is lying. The purpose is to understand the significance of nonverbal cues in trustworthiness assessments. By asking individuals to provide one true and one false statement, we analyze their facial reactions to determine the accuracy of their claims. Our hypothesis suggests that we can decipher lies through expressions, and the results affirm this, showing a 64% accuracy rate in identifying deception based on facial cues. Understanding these indicators can enhance interpersonal communication and trust-building.

  7. Variable • Manipulated: True or false statement • Responding: Facial expressions used to tell if someone is lying or not • Constant: Number of questions asked and directions given to test subjects

  8. Directions 1. Walk up to a person and ask them to think of two statements about themselves. One should be true and the other should be false. 2. Ask the person to say one of the sentences out loud. Record whether you think the statement was true or false using facial expressions to decide. 3. Repeat step 2 for the second statement. 4. Ask person to tell you which statement was true and false . 5. Repeat steps 1-4 four more times using a different person each. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 for four more trials. 7.
