  3. JASON2 Sensors • CNES • Poseidon-3 (C and KU Band): Dual Frequency RADAR Altimeter • DORIS: Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite • T2L2: Time Transfer by Laser Links; Compare distant clocks and aid in characterization of DORIS noise • LPT: Light Particles Telescope (Japan); Radiation in Satellite Environment • Carmen-2: Environment Characterization and Modelization; Radiation in the Satellite Environment • NASA • AMR: Advanced Microwave Radiometer • LRA: LASER Retroreflector Array • GPSP: Global Positioning System Payload

  4. JASON2 Status • Launch Scheduled for June 15 2008 from Vandenberg • NOAA • Command and Control; In place • Operational Data Processing; Under development • Operational Distribution: Under development • Archive by CLASS; Initial support & testing begin Jan. 2008 • EUMETSAT • Operational Data Processing; Under development • Operational Distribution; Under development • CNES • Poseidon Altimeter; Completed, Mated to S/C • Science Data Processing System; Under development • Payload instrument integration occurred December 2006 – June 2007 • Satellite assembly, integration, test – June 2007 to January 2008 • NASA (JPL) • AMR; Completed Mated to S/C • Launch Services (Delta ll 7320); Scheduled

  5. JASON2 Products • Operational Geophysical Data Record (OGDR) • Produced by NOAA and EUMETSAT within 3 hours of observation • Native NetCDF format as well as OGDR-BUFR format • Operational Distribution from DDS • Orbit computed onboard from DORIS to 10 cm • Ground contact based files (products) • Interim Geophysical Data Record (IGDR) • Produced by CNES within 1-2 days • Segmented by passes (half orbital revs) • NetCDF format • 2.5 cm orbit accuracy • Geophysical Data Record (GDR) • Produced by CNES within 60 days • Cycle (10-days) based & pass segmented • NetCDF format • 1.5 cm precise orbit • O/I/GDR Contents • Sea Surface Height • Wind speed • Significant Wave Height • RADAR Backscatter • S-IGDR & S-GDR contain radar echo "waveforms" • O/I/GDR-SSHA products also available: reduced 1-Hz datasets

  6. JASON2 Schedule • Launch June 15, 2008 from Vandenberg • 1 month Orbit Acquisition & instrument checkout • Cycle 1 begins ~ July 16, 2008 • 5 months NRT Verification • NRT Data Distribution by NOAA & EUM begins Dec, 2008 • Do operational users want first 5 months of the NRT data reprocessed with final algorithms/software? • 5 more months Offline Verification • Offline data Distribution: May 2009 • Project begins using “final” algorithms at this time
