  2. Health New York State requirement Semester course Upon completion, students will earn ½ a credit.

  3. The purpose of health education is to build life skills that will have an impact on students well-being.

  4. Health : a state of being associated with reduced risk of disease and illness. It includes the presence of wellness.

  5. Wellness:high quality of life. • Living up to ones full potential even if health is compromised. • All wellness dimensions are within reasonable balance.

  6. Wellness Dimensions • Mental and Emotional- coping skills, feelings • Intellectual- knowledge building, creativity • Physical- fitness, nutrition, self-care, safety • Social- relationship building, family dynamics, friends • Occupational- education, vocation, careers • Spiritual- self-awareness, values, ethics • Environmental- community and global awareness

Health Curriculum Topics Covered: Health and Wellness • Mental health and illness • Stress management • Nutrition and Fitness • Licit and illicit: drugs, tobacco and alcohol • First Aid and safety • Disease, including STI’s and HIV/AIDs • Environmental issues • Human Sexuality/Family Life/Parenting

Classroom Dynamics: • Journal Writing and Discussion • Personal Assessments • Discussion of Current Events- “Round Robins” • Problem-Based Learning/Role-Plays • Group Activities/Projects • Multiple Intelligence Instruction • Resource Management Activities- informed consumer • Involved Classroom Atmosphere • Continuous Opportunities for Personal Growth

  9. Internal Locus of Control • The belief that I am in control of what happens to me. • Students are made aware of personal choices and how those choices have an impact on their well-being in a positive or negative way.
