Religious Education Support - SLSS 2 Ren Descartes Descartes was born in 1596 in Tours in France Well travelled man Rejected ancient philosophy, e.g. Aristotle Often called the Father of Modern Philosophy Descartes was interested in the question of Human Existence Believes knowledge begins with the self

Religious Education Support - SLSS 3 Age of reason Also called the Enlightenment 17th and 18th Centuries Huge developments in Science, Geography and Religion Caused much tension and misunderstanding between religion and science Some thinkers began to think that people had control of their own destinies and did not need God Science and religion did not always fully listen to the others view or perspective

Religious Education Support - SLSS 4 Human Person Descartes believed the human person was Rational had the ability to reason and make rational sense of things Autonomous - the ability to do things by themselves and without others influence Descartes believed that the ability to reason was a God-given gift This was the opposite to the view that the human person was at the mercy of divine authority

Religious Education Support - SLSS 5 Doubt Descartes searched for something that he could say for absolute certain was true He rejected any information that was taught to him, or anything he learned through the senses. He began to doubt all things When he did this, the only thing he could know for certain was that he was thinking.

Religious Education Support - SLSS 6 I Think, Therefore I am The only thing Descartes knew for certain was that he was thinking Descartes said that thinking could not happen in mid-air He said that thinking required a consciousness or mind to do the thinking. This is how he came up with his famous Cogito I think, therefore I am I think, therefore I exist He said that thinking requires a thinker to do the thinking.

    7. Religious Education Support - SLSS 7 God Descartes believed in God. This belief came through his rational thinking about existence and the world. After he doubted all things, he still had a sense of a perfect entity. He said this idea could only have come from one who is perfect God He believed that God had given us this innate idea when he created us.
