  8. ACUPUNCTURE: THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE TAO Classical acupuncture is a vast body of ancient knowledge collected over centuries by the Chinese. It is a system of diagnosing and treating disease using fine needles inserted into specific points on the body. The basis for understanding acupuncture’s effects is Taoism. Taoism, created by Laozi, is ancient Chinese philosophy that strives for achieving harmony. Taoists believe that the Ying and Yang are forces in the universe. These equal but opposite forces coexist in the universe and must be in balance for harmony to exist. Sickness and diseases are thought to be a result from a imbalance in the Ying and Yang in the body. Acupuncturists inserted needles into specific points in the body to help restore the balance of energy in a given organ system. The goal was to restore the balance of Ying and Yang and thereby restore health.

  9. In Chinese (eastern) medicine, people look at the body as a whole in which health is considered to be a state of total harmony between the physical, emotional and spiritual states of a person. If the Ying and Yang are balanced with your body, you will remain happy and healthy.
