  1. An overview: Goals History & Transition Logistics Budget Rewards

  2. What is E-luminate? A service-learning program where U.S. schools create e-books and other electronic materials to help meet the educational needs of students at various international sister schools. These electronic materials are then used in a multimedia center built at our sister schools using the participation fees raised by U.S. schools.

  4. Goals • To enhance literacy and learning abroad by creating educational infrastructure and materials for vulnerable children in countries where English proficiency is necessary for success.

  5. Goals • To enhance literacy and learning abroad by creating educational infrastructure and materials for vulnerable children in countries where English proficiency is necessary for success. • To support literacy in U.S. schools by motivating students to read and write for an audience of their peers who will value their work.

  6. Goals • To enhance literacy and learning abroad by creating educational infrastructure and materials for vulnerable children in countries where English proficiency is necessary for success. • To support literacy in U.S. schools by motivating students to read and write for an audience of their peers who will value their work. • To foster empathy and social responsibility in American students by providing an effective way for them to learn about and make a difference in the lives of children facing war, poverty, disease, and slavery around the world.

  7. Letter from a U.S. Teacher Nearly 120 kids participated in this project, resulting in some of the most stunning stories and artwork I've ever seen. The students… learned about what life is like for others around the world whose struggles extend far beyond anything any of us have experienced. The kids were amazed and jumped into action after learning about the situation in Uganda…

The students… learned about what life is like for others around the world whose struggles extend far beyond anything any of us have experienced. The kids were amazed and jumped into action after learning about the situation in Uganda… One of my favorite teacher moments this year was during our last unit - the American Civil War. I asked my classes if that was the only civil war in history. Someone in each of my five classes mentioned the civil strife in Uganda. I screamed an internal “YES!!” If their awareness of others helped to make them more globally minded I had achieved my goal.

  9. Quote from a Ugandan teacher: I had been teaching my students about dolphins for years, but, until now, they have never seen a picture of one.

  11. From printed books to digital books The program originally started as Books of Hope, where we shipped hard copy books and donated supplies. The 2011-12 school year marks a transitional year for the program, from Books of Hope to E-luminate.

  12. Accomplishments of Books of Hope 2006-2010 Books of Hope was a very effective program in many ways! In 4 years, we involved over 50,000 students and 1200 teachers and countless community members from all 50 states.

  13. Accomplishments of Books of Hope 2006-2010 Books of Hope was a very effective program in many ways! In 4 years, we sent 35,000 pounds of donations: • Over 50,000 student-made books • Over 20,000 published books • Over $40,000 in donated supplies

  14. Accomplishments of Books of Hope 2006-2010 Books of Hope was a very effective program in many ways! In 4 years, we distributed those books, supplies, and thousands of dollars in contributions to 17 schools in Kampala and northern Ugandan that serve Acholi children.

  15. How does E-luminate Work? • U.S. schools register on our website to create electronic materials for the international school(s) where we’ll build our multimedia center that year. They agree to pay the participation fee for that year.

They agree to pay the participation fee for that year. • They choose from a list of dozens of subject areas that the international schools have requested materials in.

  21. Which file formats can we use? • Video! (avi, h264, mpeg, mpeg2, mpeg4, etc) • Audio! (wav, mp3, etc.) • PDF • Microsoft Word • Microsoft Publisher • Microsoft PowerPoint • Apple Pages • Adobe InDesign • Image formats (jpeg, tiff, png, bmp, etc) • Please contact us if you have questions about other formats.

  22. Why the change to digital? 1. The vast majority of our budget was going to private warehousing, shipping, trucking, & logistical companies, rather than towards infrastructure upgrades and equipment for our 17 sister schools in Uganda.

  23. Why the change to digital? 1. The vast majority of our budget was going to private warehousing, shipping, trucking, & logistical companies, rather than towards infrastructure upgrades and equipment for our 17 sister schools in Uganda. Now, through E-luminate, we’ll be able to put all of that money - $15,000 to $20,000 each year – into our Ugandan schools. That goes a long way in Uganda. We’re also less vulnerable to our own revenue fluctuations in years when we may have low participation.

  24. Why the change to digital? 2. The corruption and bureaucracy in Uganda led to huge delays and left us vulnerable to paying unwarranted fees and fines, all based on the whims of customs agents. The shipping process often took 10 months.

  25. Why the change to digital? 2. The corruption and bureaucracy in Uganda led to huge delays and left us vulnerable to paying unwarranted fees and fines, all based on the whims of customs agents. The shipping process often took 10 months. Now, through E-luminate, we will no longer be subject to arbitrary instances of corruption (or Somali pirates). We will only need to get the approval of the local education officer for our renovations, and we have already established relationships with those officials. We can build a center in 3 months.

  26. Why the change to digital? 3. The project was quite costly for U.S. schools, who had to pay our participation fee ($225), printing and binding costs for their books, domestic shipping to our U.S. warehouse, and often additional fees for shipping donated supplies.

The project was quite costly for U.S. schools, who had to pay our participation fee ($225), printing and binding costs for their books, domestic shipping to our U.S. warehouse, and often additional fees for shipping donated supplies. Now, depending on how our U.S. schools implement the program, they will only need to pay our participation fee, which we were able to bring down, and a nominal postage fee to mail us their CD or DVD of electronic files.

  28. Why the change to digital? 4. Books of Hope generated an enormous amount of waste: • ink and paper for printing • thousands of cardboard boxes and plastic used for packaging • fuel needed for domestic and international transport, on both land and sea

  29. Why the change to digital? 4. Books of Hope generated an enormous amount of waste: • ink and paper for printing • thousands of cardboard boxes and plastic used for packaging • fuel needed for domestic and international transport, on both land and sea Instead, going digital is an almost entirely green solution for delivering a virtually infinite amount of educational materials to our international schools. We even plan to install solar panels as a sustainable source of electricity for our multimedia centers.

  30. Why the change to digital? 5. Most importantly, our international schools requested the change! Due to a total lack of secure storage space and book cases, they were having a difficult time keeping safe and utilizing the materials we had sent.

  31. Why the change to digital? 5. Most importantly, our international schools requested the change! Due to a total lack of secure storage space and book cases, they were having a difficult time keeping safe and utilizing the materials we had sent. They’re VERY excited about their building upgrades, electricity, and multimedia learning resources! Over time, we’ll even be able to add book cases to help them better use the hard copy books we’ve already sent.

  32. We’re very excited about our new direction and hope you are, too! Please let us know if you have any questions we can help you answer! Abha Thakkar info@e-luminate.org 608-466-4534
