We get our energy to run, grow and think from the chemical energy we find in our food. What is Energy?. Plants get their energy from the sun. They use this energy to grow, produce seed and reproduce. Why do we need electrical energy?. To enjoy watching TV.

  1. We get our energy to run, grow and think from the chemical energy we find in our food What is Energy?. Plants get their energy from the sun. They use this energy to grow, produce seed and reproduce

  2. Why do we need electrical energy? To enjoy watching TV To keep our food fresh, to cook our food

  3. Lighting to do our Homework at Night To keep connected

  4. Eskom supplies 95% of South Africa’s electricity Energy needs

  5. Coal, a fossil fuel is burnt in large power houses to make electricity

  6. South Africa is in an Energy Crisis. There is more demand for energy than can be supplied. • Homes • Factories • Traffic Lights • Businesses • Shops • Transport

  7. Eskom does not have enough electricity for all of South Africa’s energy needs Loading shedding helps us to ensure that 55 million people each have some share of electrical energy.

  8. Crude oil under the ground How are we going to find more energy??? Burning coal We can get natural gas from pockets deep under the ground through a process called Fracking

  9. They blast water + sand + chemicals into a well deep under the ground.

  10. It is about mining for shale gas!

  11. Where in South Africa will Gas companies like Shell

  12. Great!! So Fracking is going to solve our Energy crisis? Umm its not so simple!!!- Fracking causes lots of problems with people and their environment

  13. How do they do that?!

  14. There is very little water in SA and city people often waste it by not fixing leaks

  15. Each Frack can use up to 20 million litres of water per well. X 20 000000

  16. Each frack uses up to 200, 000 litres of toxic chemical like

  17. And the animal that live there!!

  18. Habitat destructions

  19. Harmful chemicals can leak into the ground water poisoning the only water stores we have available

  20. And even contaminate our beautiful rivers

  21. 150 000 kg of Sand is used for each frack

  22. The sand is stripped from the river banks causing erosion

  23. The Government says that Fracking will create 43 000 jobs But in reality, fracking will only provide 17 000 jobs and in 3-6 years the gas will be finished, the jobs will end and our land will be left destroyed

  25. Use clean sources of energy that does not hurt our planet
