  3. NIHS Program • All students have IB on their transcripts • All students complete IB curriculum • All students complete CAS • All students take ToK • All students do Internal Assessments

  4. Certificate Testing • Students test in some subject areas. • We recommend certificate testing for students who have strengths in specific subject areas. • Take 0-2 tests as a junior • Take 0-5 tests as a senior

Full IB Diploma Requirements • Enroll in North International High School • Complete Theory of Knowledge and required paper and oral presentation • Complete 150 hours of activities in the categories of Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) • Complete and submit an Extended Essay senior year • Do advanced academic work and testing in six areas of study, three of which must be at the Higher Level (two years of instruction completed).

  6. Requirements Continued… • The six subjects must include: a. History b. Language A1 (English) c. Science (Bio or Chem) d. Mathematics (Pre-Calc) e. Language B (Japanese or Spanish) f. Film Studies • Exams are taken in grades 11 and 12 only. • Up to two SL exams can be taken in your junior year. We recommend this as it creates less work for you your senior year. HL exams cannot be taken in your junior year.

Junior Year - 2 SL Courses Film Studies 3 Internal Assessments done in class (Standard Level) --------------------------------------------------------------- IB Math Studies Math project (Pre-Calculus) IB Test in May (Standard Level) OR Spanish AP/IB or Taped orals Japanese IB IB Test in May (Standard Level)

  9. Senior Year - 3 HL + 1 SL IB Literature (HL) Literary Analysis Essays Lit. Oral Commentary IB Test in May IB History (HL) Indep. History research paper IB Test in May AP/IB Biology or Lab write-ups AP/IB Chemistry Group Project (HL) IB Test in May ToK Paper and Presentation

  10. Why should my son or daughter pursue IB testing?

Student A: • Takes IB English Exam and receives 5. • UO: 12 credits (WR 121, 122, Eng 104) • OSU: 12 credits (WR 121,122, Eng 104,105) • PSU: 12 credits (Eng 104-106) • In comparison to AP credit: only 3 credits awarded for writing 121 if pass AP exam with 3 or better at OSU, 8 credits at PSU (WR 121 and Eng 100.)

Student B goes for full diploma: • At OSU if you receive a score of 30 or higher: • Guaranteed admission to OSU • Sophomore standing and IB scholarships • Annual, renewable $3000 scholarship • IB specific scholarships available at OSU, Pacific, UO and Western • 2nd year status awarded at George Fox, OSU, Pacific, PSU, UO, Western and Willamette

  13. SAVE MONEY!!! • Juniors: One exam: $260.00 Two exams: $365.00 • Seniors: Four exams: $420.00 Five exams: $525.00 • Total = $785 • OSU is $2533 a term (12 credits) • $7599 for 1 year at OSU so save $6814 + books + living expenses...

Statistics: • Studies conducted by colleges and universities found: • IB students are more engaged (academic and social) • Even IB students who scored 1s or 2s on IB tests had higher postsecondary scores • IB students have higher levels of participation and success, higher graduation rates • Colleges now seek out IB students • www.ibo.org/research • Tell NIHS students to include IB information on their college and scholarship applications

  17. October 14th Deadline!!!! • The registration form and check must be turned in by October 14th. • Register and pay for this year’s tests only. • FRL - pay 1/2 of exam fees • Payment plans available in IHS office

CAS = Creativity, Action, Service • 50 hours of each • Creativity - Painting a mural, designing a pamphlet, making quilts, etc. • Action - sport, yoga, dancing, etc. • Service - volunteering anywhere not for pay or credit • Mrs. Downey - presents 10th grades the CAS info in May • Mrs. Kostechka reviews CAS with the 11th graders during second semester. • All CAS for seniors due on April 15, 2011. • All CAS forms are available on our website and in the IHS office.
