IB in’s and out’s • History of the America’s – Not just the USA • 20th Century World History (3 Prescribed Subjects) • Prescribed Subject - Communism in Crisis 1976-1989 • 20th Century World History • 5 topics – must do 2 of 5 (Teach 3 of 12) • Causes, practices and effects of wars (Quarter 1) • The Cold War (Quarter 2) • Historical Investigation • Internal Assessment

  6. IB in’s and out’s • You will be completing a lot of independent work • You will work in groups • You will need to spend a lot of out of school time reading and completing your class work • Missing this class is not an option

  7. Thinking History • What is history? • Why do we study history? • How do we study history?

  8. How to study History • Documents • Primary • Secondary • Reading • Analyze • Question • Draw conclusions with justification (Back up your thinking)

The IB Class • As of right now the majority of information will come from copies of material I provide for you • Reading and note taking along with studying on a regular basis will be the only way you will be successful in this class • There is an opportunity to receive college credit • You will take a test at the end of this year (Paper 1, 2, & 3) • Only diploma candidates complete the extended essay • The Internal Assessment is completed independently with my guidance

The IB Class - Grading • Marks – IB Points • Rubric Marks on a scale (Ex: 1-7) • Some Colleges and University will give you credit for a 4 or 5 and above; you will receive certificate with a 3 • I have no control over the scoring of the I.A. & 3 papers • I will score some work but all IB external work gets scored by a qualified person • I have witnessed teachers scoring students a 6 and external scored the work a 2 (Not Uncommon)

  11. You MUST!!! • Question – historians question what they read, hear, and see • You should always be looking for the WHY!!! • Other history classes teach students the WHO, WHAT, WHEN & WHERE but IB history wants the student to be able to answer the WHY.
