  2. San Jacinto Monument • In March of 1836, the war for Texas independence was being waged against Mexico, and General Sam Houston and his Texan troops. This event soon led to the San Jacinto Monument.

  3. Importance/Significance • The San Jacinto Monument commemorates the 1836 battle near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou and the San Jacinto River that allowed Texas to win independence from Mexico. It is the world's tallest monument, rising 15 feet higher than the Washington Monument.

  4. What We Learned • We learned that the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, which is also a national Historic Landmark, consists of the Battleground, Monument and Battle Ship. The famous Battle of San Jacinto that brought Texas its independence was fought on this site.

  5. What Was Interesting • Cost: $1.5 million • Height: 567.31 feet • Weight: Approximately 70 million lbs.
