Dual Degree Program Options BS / Master of Engineering (ME) in Mechanical Engineering • Professional-focused master’s degree; Requires capstone • Career goal  industry BS / Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering • Research-focused master’s degree; Requires thesis • Career goal  advanced degrees, eg. PhD BS in Mech E / MS in Science, Tech and Public Policy • Policy-focused master’s degree; Requires thesis • Assumes students have a public policy COLA undergrad concentration • Career goal government, law, industry

  5. Degree Program Requirements • Study outside of the ME Department is encouraged. No more than 3 courses can be taken outside the ME department. • Students must attend ME graduate seminar each term on campus. • Capstone options: Design Project Leadership, Project with Paper, or Graduate Internship

  6. Dual Degree Program Requirements • Double counting of 3 courses, 1 co-op reduction • Graduate courses at undergrad tuition rate (~20% reduction) • Both degrees MUST be awarded concurrently in accordance with State of New York Department of Education regulations.

  7. Dual Degree Program Requirements GPA • Maintain CGPA above 3.2 and graduate program GPA above 3.0 • Falling below GPA minimums will result in removal from program • Note: Grades of repeated grad courses are averaged into the graduate GPA, not replaced like is done in undergrad courses. Graduate Status • Years 1-5 (less than 129 SCH)  undergraduate students • Year 6 (more than 129 SCH)  graduate students • Year 6 students are eligible for graduate student benefits such as fellowships, graduate loan programs, full time equivalency, etc. Completion Time • Must be certifiable for BS degree by end of spring semester year 5. • Complete BOTH degrees by end of Year 6 spring semester (summer semester under extenuating circumstances).

ME vs. MS Degree • ME  Professional | MS  Research All dual degree students start in the ME track To transition from ME to MS, you must: • Find a faculty advisor willing to work with you on a thesis • Develop a thesis proposal with this advisor • Have your proposal approved by a faculty committee • Take GRE before thesis defense

Financial Aid Scholarships • Undergraduate scholarships are still applicable for DDS • Graduate courses at undergrad tuition rate (~20% reduction) Teaching Assistantships • Typically available for fourth and fifth year students Research Assistantships • Professor-specific support for students from externally sponsored programs and contracts. Other • PC labbies, graders, lab assistants, shop assistants, etc.

Dual Degree Admissions Requirements • Have completed 2nd year courses • Minimum CGPA of 3.4 (3.0 for STPP) To apply online, you will need to: • Meet GPA requirements • Provide a personal statement • Provide names of two ME faculty who have agreed to write a recommendation letter for you (one should be your faculty advisor) • Direct references to submit their recommendations online Application & References Deadline: March 30, 2018 Admission decisions announced Summer of 2018

Dual Degree Admissions Timeline Fall & SpringME Dept holds dual degree program information sessions Fall & Spring ME Dept invites dual degree applications via email with links Mar 30, 2018 Online applications and reference letters are due Summer Application reviews begin after spring semester grades are posted Summer Application reviews are concluded decisions are made Next Fall Accepted students begin planning / taking graduate coursework Possible Outcomes: • ACCEPTED: Students are offered admission to the BS/ME or BS/MSSTPP program effective upcoming Fall Semester (DDS can later transition to BS/MS). • DECLINED: Students are declined admission to the dual degree program. Students may be asked to apply again next year after completing additional courses, and/or increasing their GPA.
