  3. Definitions • Holiness: The majestic perfection of God whereby He is absolutely separate from sin and wholly worthy of glory • Love:God’s delight to consistently and continually promote the best interests of the whole of creation and every individual member of it

Love - Combinations • Love – God is committed to my best. • Omniscience– God knows what is in my best interest. • Omnipotence– God has the power to do what is in my best interest. • Omnipresence & Eternality – God is “on location” to promote my best interest regardless of where I am in space and time.

Love - Combinations • Sovereignty – God is free to do what is in my best interest. • Immutable – God’s commitment to my best is unfailing and consistent. • Holy– His love is unlimited and untainted in its commitment to my best. • Self-Sufficient – God’s love is selfless in its desire for my best 

  9. 6Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle performing the divine worship, 7but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance (Heb. 9:3-7).

  10. 1Now the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they had approached the presence of the Lord and died. 2The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, or he will die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. 3Aaron shall enter the holy place with this: with a bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering” (Lev. 16:1-3).

  11. 1Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God (Rom. 5:1-2). God’s holiness despises what defines me. His love seeks my best. His grace allows both to operate without opposing the other and without dilution.

  12. 1Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God (Rom. 5:1-2). Through grace, He pours out His holy hatred toward ME on His own Son. Through grace, He promotes the best of one who is wholly undeserving of that love without consideration for Himself.

Grace - Definition • Short Definition – God’s unmerited kindness • Long Definition - God’s commitment to do good to those who do not deserve it. • This is not just about undeserved blessing but can also include “disproportionate blessing.” • Mercy is sometimes presented as a counterpart to grace, but is better conceived as love for those in distress.

Grace – Key Vss. • After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you (1 Pet. 5:10). • For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly (Ps. 84:11).

Grace – Key Vss. • And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). • 16For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ (John 1:16-17).

  16. Grace – Clarified • The “grace of God” can simply refer to His favor, a positive pre-disposition. • The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him (Luke 2:40).

Grace – Clarified • The “grace of God” can simply refer to His favor, a positive pre-disposition (Luke 2:40). • Grace is, by definition, not a divine obligation: • And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion” (Ex. 33:19).

  18. Grace – Implications • Grace always “outflanks” sin - it’s always one step ahead of it: • The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more (Rom. 5:20).

The Range of Grace Applications 9And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Cor. 12:7-10).

  21. The Range of Grace Weaknesses, Criticisms, Obstacles, Persecutions, and Limitations are desirable . . . Because God’s grace works more actively under these conditions Because there is no doubt about how much credit WE deserve Because what is accomplished is “only by the hand of God.”

  22. Equal Grace for All? God shows equal kindness to good men and to evil men by providing both with sunlight and rain (Matt. 5:44-45). God lavishes patience, kindness, and tolerance on unrepentant hypocrites (Rom. 2:1-4). But there is a limit to the degree of grace that is granted to some (1 Pet. 5:5).

  23. Equal Grace for All? All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (1 Pet. 5:5). • In the case of the proud man, God thwarts his plans. • In the case of the humble man, God provides outcomes that exceed his expectations.

  24. Grace – Implications • The recipients of grace ought to be fluent in the language of grace! • Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear (Eph. 4:29).

Grace – Implications 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:14-16).
