  2. The healing springs of Pautalia

  3. At the place where is today's Kyustendil, the Romans created a city before 2000years.They took the lands of the Thracian tribes and turned the settlements into strongholds. Over the centuries around the warm springs of this place a fortress has been made. It became an important commercial center. • It is believed that its name comes from Pautalia – a Thracian word which means spring. Pautalia was an ancient village with intense life - administrative, economic and cultural center of the vast territory. Pautalia received city rights in 106 AD and added to its name prefix "Ulpia" (in Latin. Ulpia Pautalia). • During the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) to Emperor Caracalla (198-217) the town minted its own coins, which are a rich source of information about public life.

  4. Pautalia has a varied religious life. • The official Roman cult is expressed by the worship of Jupiter and Juno. • The Economic development of Pautalia is associated with fertility and wealth of its fields.

  5. In the terms of it architecture Pautalia is well- built and well- developed town. • Not only the documented archaeological remains of public buildings such as parts of architectural complexes, basilicas, baths give interesting data but also the Pautalia coins provide unique images.

  6. One of Pautalia’s famous attractions were the Roman Baths. The Oldest found so far and partially explored antique bathroom in Pautalia received notoriety definition " Asclepion " and it is considered as part of this complex. • A characteristic feature of Pautalia Baths is the use of mineral springs, which defines them as mineral baths.

  7. An ancient Legend tells that the Roman emperor Trajan Ulpius suffered from severe skin disease for many years. His whole face was covered with wounds. No one could cure him. • The wounds started to cover his body. Day by day his health became worse and worse .His strength gradually disappeared. Then a medicine woman told him about the healing mineral springs.

  8. The Emperor decided to try this way of healing. His servants brought him on a stretcher and left him near the rising mineral spring. The Emperor strength began to return from the life – giving water. He got up and washed his face. His wounds disappeared. • Then Ulpius Trajan raised his hand and said to his companions: "From now on, this town with healing springs will be named Pautalia (springs city).
