  5. Celebrate 20 years Consortium Founder: Charles Bazerman • In 1992, Bazerman initiated the formation of a small group that would explore the need for a consortium. • Bazerman was a member of the initial group that met in 1992/1993 and member of the original steering committee.

  25. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1992/1993 • Two small groups met at two consecutive Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) meetings to discuss the need for a consortium.

  26. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1993 • The Consortium steering committee formed in 1993.

  27. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1993 • 56 programs registered to be a part of the Consortium as a result of the interest letters sent in that first year.

  28. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1994 • The first official meeting of the Consortium was held at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) in Nashville.

  29. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1994 • Stuart Brown, Paul Meyer and Theresa Enos first published their findings from their survey of doctoral programs in the Rhetoric Review.

  30. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 1995 • The Consortium sponsored its first whole-day pre-convention workshop at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) .

  32. Key Moments and Achievements: 1997 • As a result of efforts by the Consortium members, a new category was established in Dissertation International Abstracts index: Rhetoric and Composition. Celebrate 20 years

  33. Key Moments and Achievements: 2004 • 62 programs were registered with the Consortium. Celebrate 20 years

  34. Key Moments and Achievements: 2004 • The Visibility Project began, led by Louise Wetherbee Phelps. It originally formed in support of an initiative dedicated to getting recognition by the National Research Council (NRC) for doctoral programs in Rhetoric and Composition. Celebrate 20 years

  35. Key Moments and Achievements: 2006 • The Executive Committee of the Consortium was formed. Celebrate 20 years

  36. Key Moments and Achievements: 2008 • The Consortium formed a Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Taskforce to advocate for the inclusion of Rhetoric and Composition in the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). Celebrate 20 years

  37. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2008 • The Visibility Project was turned over to the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) as an initiative supporting Rhetoric and Composition at all degree levels, undergraduate and graduate.

  38. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2009 • The National Research Council (NRC) recognized Rhetoric and Composition as a growing field.

  39. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2009 • The Consortium developed its governing bylaws.

  40. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2009 • The National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) released a revised classification code for instructional programs (CIP) to include Rhetoric and Composition.

  41. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2011 • The Committee on Professional Visibility and Databases succeeded in having a (Survey of Earned Doctorates) SED code granted to Rhetoric and Composition.

Key Moments and Achievements: 2011 • Reporting on the work of the Visibility Project, Louise Wetherbee Phelps and John Ackerman published “Making the Case for Disciplinarity in Rhetoric, Composition and Writing Studies: The Visibility Project” in College Composition and Communication. Celebrate 20 years

  43. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2012 • Over 70 programs are registered with the Consortium.

  44. Celebrate 20 years Key Moments and Achievements: 2013 • The Consortium celebrates 20 years along with the special birthday of its longtime leader, Janice Lauer. • Happy Birthday, Janice!
